  • Weekly Writing Update: Survey says! Words! Scrivener! Thor! #amwriting #urbanfantasy

Not much writing was accomplished this week. School started back for my daughter and all the things conspired against me. Then I got a mad whim to finally learn how to use Scrivener. I bought the program two years ago and promptly let it get covered in digital mothballs on my hard drive. I think I opened it once, decided meh, and moved on.

I’ve written seven books in Word and my latest work-in-progress has been primarily written on my iPad in Pages. It seems to convert effortlessly to Word docx documents so all good.

Then the writing got slow. Really slow. Like writing through quicksand slow. Every tiny word gain was like pulling teeth. Way too slow and way too painful.

Part of that was my pantsing writing style. I had a plan…okay let’s get honest…half a plan when I started but then–THEN–it all petered out. Erm, I’m pretty sure my readers aren’t going to accept a 35K book four.

In Word, your writing document is one long scroll. It’s hard, super hard, trying to sort through it and move scenes if you find you need to. And that was exactly where I was. I couldn’t remember where scenes had happened or remember which POVs I’d used. The whole thing was feeling jumbled, thin and painful.

When I saw Joanna Penn was hosting a free Live Scrivener Masters Class webinar, I decided to jump on board. The next challenge, however, was my ridiculously slow internet connection. Folks. if you ever wondered where the end of the internet is it is my house. I had to pack up my iPad and head to McDonald’s in Metropolis.

The problem was their internet was only slightly better. The audio was tinny and broken, and I was beginning to think the Verse just didn’t want this book to happen for me. Well, SCREW THE VERSE. This book was happening, dang it! I toughed it out and picked up enough tips to at least know the language of the program and what questions to google when I got stuck.

I went home and imported my WIP into Scrivener and went to town. Not literal town because I’d just gotten home from Metropolis after all. I stayed up way too late breaking my 115 pages into chapters and scenes, assigning POV labels and learning how to use all of the fun tools. I had some super long chapters and one ridiculously short one so I did some shuffling, wrote some adorably helpful cork board synopses and like magic, I was ready to add some words!

I finally got up to the writing cave last night around 10:30 p.m. and by 2 a.m. I’d added nearly 3,000 words and broken past 40k. I even have a bit of a plan for the rest of the story, and I high hopes for the coming week. Those hopes are lower for my sleep hours. Lots going on this week.

Last night, I finally got up to the writing cave last night around 10:30 p.m., turned off all of my distractions (I’m looking at you internet), and by 2 a.m. I’d added nearly 3,000 words and broken past 40k. I even have a bit of a plan for the rest of the story, and I have high hopes for the coming week. Those hopes are lower for my sleep hours. Lots going on this week.

Last week, I sent out a newsletter update to my mailing list along with a survey to see if readers thought Ruth’s baby would be a BOY or a GIRL. If you’ve read the series, you know which was Ruth was leaning. The results are in and survey says:

You’ll have to read Reap & Reckon on January 6 to see which it is 😀

Also, a little piece of life advice for you…Never pass up a photo op with Thor.

Finally, I have one more surprise coming up in a week or so. Stay tuned and Reap on!

  • July Writing Stats and Reckon Progress #amwriting #urbanfantasy

The good news is I made words in July and progress on Reap & Reckon. The bad news is it wasn’t nearly as much as I had hoped.

I signed up for Camp NANOWRIMO with a goal of 30k. I fell far short of that but did make 6,200K new words forward on Reckon. That little jaunt has me at approximately 40% of my end goal (32,137). I never really know how long a story will be, but I’m aiming for around 70-80K.

There’s a lot going on in Reckon and many loose ends to tidy up.

I squeezed in little writing sprints where I could and on the days I was able to write I was very productive.

Today begins a new month and a new opportunity to advance the story. I keep wanting to share a bit of the first chapter but there is a MAJOR spoiler on the very first page! What do you think? Can you handle it? Do you want it?

Make your case in the comments, and I’ll carefully consider your request for a first chapter reveal.

Be careful what you wish for…

Meanwhile, if this is your first visit to my site or you’ve been holding out for some bizarre reason, you can start the series for free today!

    Reap & Repent blurb:

They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

  • I’ve been #covfefe for a while now. Time to get back to the grind.

Not gonna lie. I’ve been playing covfefe for a while now. Also known as…erm…not writing. In my defense, I did work on a little between-the-stories short work to give away to my mailing list subscribers. Still working on that one.

Also still sitting at 25K on Reckon.

What I have been working on lately is…me. I’ve lost ten pounds since May 2. Plenty more to go, but feeling great! We’ve been eating mostly Paleo recipes and low carbs. If you know me at all, you’ll know that’s insane. I’ve run on carbs and sugar for the past 49 years. The change has been good for me and the husband. The kid is less than thrilled, but she’ll come along. Bryon is down fifteen pounds.

I’ve eaten more vegetables in the past month than I have in my entire life. Brussel sprouts? I’ve eaten a dozen now. That includes my lifetime count. Cauliflower? I riced it and made a chicken stir fry. And it was … good. I know. Shocked me, too.

Now I want to make more cauliflower rice or cauliflower pasta or cauliflower pizza crust or just mash it.  Like every meal! Every meal that is when I’m not making spaghetti squash. Oh my! The wonders of spaghetti squash!

So clearly, you can see the distractions.

Also, I’ve been getting eight hours of sleep. Like in a row!

    It’s crazy town over here.

I know it won’t take much to get me back on the writing track, and I promise I will, soon.

In the meantime, I’ve been reading Stephen King’s Dark Tower Series. It’s awesome! The movie (trailer here)  looks waaaaaay different but amazing.

What are you up to this summer? What are you reading? Share below 😀

  • Tunes to Reap & Reckon by: A playlist while you wait. #ReapandReckon #darkfantasy

Here’s what I’m listening to through the day, while the characters of Reap & Reckon talk to me.

It’s dark in here. Bring a flashlight.

  • News on Reap & Reckon

Good news, reaper fans! My owl crocheting funk has come to an end!

I didn’t want to post and get you all worked up for no good reason. But now? I have some substantial progress to share.

See, I made words! We’re on our way, and it feels great having the band together again. So what can you expect in Reap & Reckon? Let me drop a few names of those who are on stage right now: Samkiel, Sgt. Victoria Moreno, Ruth, Deacon, Kylen, Nate, Maeve, Bo…Rashnu…oops, I better stop now before I give the whole thing away. You can expect more twists, turns, and some surprising matchups because even in the apocalypse, love finds a way. Or maybe that was Jurassic Park. Anyhoo, I’m writing again, and I made a promise to this year’s Visioncon attendees, and YOU, who keep asking for book four. I’ll have it done by this fall. Probably sooner. Most likely sooner.

If you haven’t already, sign up for my newsletter HERE and watch the top left corner of the web page to see how the story is progressing. I’ll update it regularly.

My favorite quote so far is this from Rashnu:

So don’t give up, reaper fans. Stay the course. Hold the line and all that. It’s coming. Faster than you can say apocalypse.

Finally, I’m starting a new Facebook Fan Group. Even if you’ve liked my Facebook page, you probably don’t see all (or any) of the posts. Facebook is so grumpy about all that. Join my Lisa Medley Reads & Writes FB group HERE.

In the meantime, look upon my accomplishments of months past. Not words, but owls. Here’s to hoping my hands are busy typing instead of crocheting in the months to come.

Of course, I did manage to crochet a reaper during that down time. Maybe I’ll give him away to a lucky newsletter subscriber when Reap & Reckon releases… you’ll have to sign up to win!  Sign up for my newsletter HERE

    Reap on.

  • Book Four of the Reaper Series: Reap & Reckon is underway

It’s happening, people. After much soul searching (and equal parts procrastination), I made progress on Reap & Reckon this weekend. The characters are already a constant chatter in my mind. They want their stories told.

After a productive weekend, Reckon sits just over 10K. This pleases me.

I started a Pinterest board. It will be fluid as the story develops, but there are a few tasty bits there to check out.

I don’t have a projected publishing date yet. I mean, hey, I just started the thing. But so far, it’s going well. Really well. It feels good having the band back together.

Also, I have a cover. Yeah, I had a cover many months before I knew if there would be a book. That’s how I roll.

Look for a cover reveal later this week.

What are you most hoping to find out in Reap & Reckon?
