    Scrivener!

Not much writing was accomplished this week. School started back for my daughter and all the things conspired against me. Then I got a mad whim to finally learn how to use Scrivener. I bought the program two years ago and promptly let it get covered in digital mothballs on my hard drive. I think I opened it once, decided meh, and moved on.

I’ve written seven books in Word and my latest work-in-progress has been primarily written on my iPad in Pages. It seems to convert effortlessly to Word docx documents so all good.

Then the writing got slow. Really slow. Like writing through quicksand slow. Every tiny word gain was like pulling teeth. Way too slow and way too painful.

    via GIPHY

Part of that was my pantsing writing style. I had a plan…okay let’s get honest…half a plan when I started but then–THEN–it all petered out. Erm, I’m pretty sure my readers aren’t going to accept a 35K book four.

In Word, your writing document is one long scroll. It’s hard, super hard, trying to sort through it and move scenes if you find you need to. And that was exactly where I was. I couldn’t remember where scenes had happened or remember which POVs I’d used. The whole thing was feeling jumbled, thin and painful.

When I saw Joanna Penn was hosting a free Live Scrivener Masters Class webinar, I decided to jump on board. The next challenge, however, was my ridiculously slow internet connection. Folks. if you ever wondered where the end of the internet is it is my house. I had to pack up my iPad and head to McDonald’s in Metropolis.

The problem was their internet was only slightly better. The audio was tinny and broken, and I was beginning to think the Verse just didn’t want this book to happen for me. Well, SCREW THE VERSE. This book was happening, dang it! I toughed it out and picked up enough tips to at least know the language of the program and what questions to google when I got stuck.

I went home and imported my WIP into Scrivener and went to town. Not literal town because I’d just gotten home from Metropolis after all. I stayed up way too late breaking my 115 pages into chapters and scenes, assigning POV labels and learning how to use all of the fun tools. I had some super long chapters and one ridiculously short one so I did some shuffling, wrote some adorably helpful cork board synopses and like magic, I was ready to add some words!

    Words!

I finally got up to the writing cave last night around 10:30 p.m. and by 2 a.m. I’d added nearly 3,000 words and broken past 40k. I even have a bit of a plan for the rest of the story, and I high hopes for the coming week. Those hopes are lower for my sleep hours. Lots going on this week.

Last night, I finally got up to the writing cave last night around 10:30 p.m., turned off all of my distractions (I’m looking at you internet), and by 2 a.m. I’d added nearly 3,000 words and broken past 40k. I even have a bit of a plan for the rest of the story, and I have high hopes for the coming week. Those hopes are lower for my sleep hours. Lots going on this week.

    Survey!

Last week, I sent out a newsletter update to my mailing list along with a survey to see if readers thought Ruth’s baby would be a BOY or a GIRL. If you’ve read the series, you know which was Ruth was leaning. The results are in and survey says:

You’ll have to read Reap & Reckon on January 6 to see which it is 😀

    Thor!

Also, a little piece of life advice for you…Never pass up a photo op with Thor.

Finally, I have one more surprise coming up in a week or so. Stay tuned and Reap on!

  • Reap & Reckon progress: new words and a reaper birth announcement! #darkfantasy #urbanfantasy #paranormal

Poor Ruth. I know, I know. She’s been pregnant FOREVER! Well, today was the day! I finally wrote the birth scene. I’m not going to lie, things were dicey, and I still don’t know for sure what’s going to happen. To any of them. BUT, suffice it to say, Ruth is no longer pregnant and all Hell is about to break loose in Meridian.

    Again.

Sorry, but you’ll have to read Reap & Reckon to find out if Ruth & Deacon’s new bundle of joy is a BOY or a GIRL.

I’m not going to lie, things were dicey, and I still don’t know for sure what’s going to happen. To any of them. BUT, suffice it to say, Ruth is no longer pregnant and all Hell is about to break loose in Meridian.

    Again.

I made some good progress this week, adding nearly 5K words. I lowered my projected word count a bit to 75K (you may notice on the progress counter at the upper left of the page). I think I’m about at the halfway point.

People have been asking when Reap & Reckon will be finished, and I’ve been loath to put a deadline on it. That said, I’m going to go ahead and announce a January 9 release date. Last year after Visioncon, I promised to have book four available for the 2018 convention. Since it looks like I’ll be a featured author at the 2018 Visioncon, I definitely want to make sure and keep that promise.

Now wait a minute, I hear you whining. January is NOT that far away. I mean, look at the summer! How quickly did THAT fly by?

January 9, people. It’s going to happen.

At some point, I’ll put up a pre-order. Probably when I get ready to send Reckon off for editing.

In the meantime, you can always reread the series, and if you haven’t started yet…

Here’s what I’m listening to through the day, while the characters of Reap & Reckon talk to me.

It’s dark in here. Bring a flashlight.

  • News on Reap & Reckon

Good news, reaper fans! My owl crocheting funk has come to an end!

I didn’t want to post and get you all worked up for no good reason. But now? I have some substantial progress to share.

See, I made words! We’re on our way, and it feels great having the band together again. So what can you expect in Reap & Reckon? Let me drop a few names of those who are on stage right now: Samkiel, Sgt. Victoria Moreno, Ruth, Deacon, Kylen, Nate, Maeve, Bo…Rashnu…oops, I better stop now before I give the whole thing away. You can expect more twists, turns, and some surprising matchups because even in the apocalypse, love finds a way. Or maybe that was Jurassic Park. Anyhoo, I’m writing again, and I made a promise to this year’s Visioncon attendees, and YOU, who keep asking for book four. I’ll have it done by this fall. Probably sooner. Most likely sooner.

If you haven’t already, sign up for my newsletter HERE and watch the top left corner of the web page to see how the story is progressing. I’ll update it regularly.

My favorite quote so far is this from Rashnu:

So don’t give up, reaper fans. Stay the course. Hold the line and all that. It’s coming. Faster than you can say apocalypse.

Finally, I’m starting a new Facebook Fan Group. Even if you’ve liked my Facebook page, you probably don’t see all (or any) of the posts. Facebook is so grumpy about all that. Join my Lisa Medley Reads & Writes FB group HERE.

In the meantime, look upon my accomplishments of months past. Not words, but owls. Here’s to hoping my hands are busy typing instead of crocheting in the months to come.

Of course, I did manage to crochet a reaper during that down time. Maybe I’ll give him away to a lucky newsletter subscriber when Reap & Reckon releases… you’ll have to sign up to win!  Sign up for my newsletter HERE

    Reap on.

  • Book Four of the Reaper Series: Reap & Reckon is underway

    IMG_5193

It’s happening, people. After much soul searching (and equal parts procrastination), I made progress on Reap & Reckon this weekend. The characters are already a constant chatter in my mind. They want their stories told.

After a productive weekend, Reckon sits just over 10K. This pleases me.

I started a Pinterest board. It will be fluid as the story develops, but there are a few tasty bits there to check out.

    https://www.pinterest.com/medley3/reap-reckon-book-four/

I don’t have a projected publishing date yet. I mean, hey, I just started the thing. But so far, it’s going well. Really well. It feels good having the band back together.

Also, I have a cover. Yeah, I had a cover many months before I knew if there would be a book. That’s how I roll.

Look for a cover reveal later this week.

What are you most hoping to find out in Reap & Reckon?

  • Reap & Repent Reviews Near 100!

I woke up to a STELLAR review on Reap & Repent this morning. It was review number 92 and made me realize just how close that was to 100 reviews!

At this point in Reap & Repent’s unconventional publication history (a year published with Harlequin and a year plus indie published),  I’m still just as excited to see a new review. I’m just glad folks are reading it…and then going on to read the other two books in my series.

Reap & Repent is FREE …forever. It’s my gateway drug.

As best as I can calculate, Reap & Repent has had around 10,000 downloads. That seems like a lot, but when you think of the WHOLE FREAKIN’ WORLD OF READERS, that’s really not that may. Of that 10,000, 92 readers have left reviews. Don’t make me do math, people. Leave reviews.

    2016-05-04

It’s sitting at 4.5 of 5 STARS and that pleases me. I remember when those first few reviews started coming in. It was TERRIFYING. I mean, sure, you can talk ten of your friends into writing something nice for your efforts, but you can’t talk 92 people into doing it. Trust me, I’ve been trying to bend people to my will for fifteen years at my day job. Can’t be done!

Reviews keep us fragile writers going. So, if you’ve read Reap & Repent but haven’t left a review…go, go now, and leave one. When I HIT or surpass 100 REVIEWS on Reap & Repent, I’m going to draw from all of the fabulous folks who have left a review on it and give away a $20 Amazon Gift Card to one lucky winner.

Feel free to tweet about it or share on FACEBOOK.

Finally, here is that fantastic review I received this morning. This chick gets it. She really, really does. No spoilers, just a whole lotta awesome review:

Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford. A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself – and the Reaper she can’t live without – if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.
