The hero of Haunt My Heart is a ghost trapped in a fetter by a pissy witch. Tanner was a Civil War soldier and a supernatural liaison for the Brothers of Peril, a secret sect of the Freemasons. When he gets on the wrong side of one of his charges, he finds himself faced with an impossible choice.

As a result, he’s hexed to an object that’s precious to him and condemned to a life of limbo unless he can find true love and break the hex.

For more information on how to identify a fetter and more importantly, how to exorcise one, I asked Alexandra Chauran, a second-generation fortune teller and professional psychic intuitive from the Seattle area for some advice.

Thanks for joining us today, Alex! Have you ever encountered a fetter? What was the object?

A fetter is a prison or a home for a spirit, and can be thought of as a haunted object. Cursed objects don’t have to be haunted fetters, but they can be. Cursed objects can also contain energy, elementals, tulpas or egregores. That’s fancy witch speak for “things that go bump in the night.” I’ve encountered fetters and cursed objects. Most often, I encounter fetters that are actually positive in nature. For example, a watch or a locket associated with the energy of the spirit of a loved one who had passed. Less commonly, I’ll find objects that have become repositories for negative energy or that have been used to entrap entities that do not want to be trapped, such as a crystal used to cage an earth elemental, or a jawbone that was used to contain a ghost.

How did your client know there was a spiritual problem with the object?

People usually know because either they are the people who created the problem with the object by messing around with various magic, or because they received the object from a magical practitioner who outright told them it was cursed. For example, one person received a necklace from a pissy witch who later told her that the necklace was cursed after the woman’s daughter noticed her hair was falling out!

Under what circumstances can/do spirits become trapped in objects?

Spirits can voluntarily move into an object if invited. This is sometimes how a person might feel close to a beloved deceased grandma when wearing her heirloom ring. However, trapping a spirit in an object is pretty heavy duty magical business. It involves an experienced and competent magical practitioner doing ritual procedures to command powerful energy with just the right equipment at just the perfect point in time. Talk about the complicated recipe from hell.

What steps did you take to free the spirit?

Destroying the object is usually the best course of action, and happily in most of my experiences people are happy to be rid of them. Some people choose to try to save the object, especially if it’s a valuable piece of jewelry, by verbally releasing the spirit and cleansing the object through methods such as sage smudging, temporary burial, passing the object through fire, packing the object in salt, or washing it. These processes are sometimes called exorcisms.

How did you know it was gone for good?

The relief that happens afterwards for everybody involved is palpable! Trapped spirits are not happy spirits. Have you ever walked into a home where two people were fighting and felt the tense energy that made you just want to disappear? Imagine the relief you’d feel if those people stopped fighting and were loving and all the energy of the home was loving and calm again. In some cases, the spirit will stick around and be thankful. In other cases, the spirit will make a hasty retreat and some sensitive people can sense its departure as a chill in the air or even by seeing the ghost. I typically perform divination such as a pendulum dowsing or crystal ball reading to confirm everything is good, but that’s because I’m addicted to fortune telling.

Any other advice for dealing with a fetter?

Don’t just throw away the object and possibly scare the garbage man or give it away to somebody unsuspecting by tossing it into a donation bin.  Even if you’re trying to convince yourself that it’s all in your head, that’s not a nice thing to do to somebody else if you happen to be right about the object being cursed or haunted. There are plenty of witches and psychics out there, myself included, who are happy to receive cursed objects by mail if you simply ask nicely. Also, don’t let anybody tell you that it costs a lot of money to remove a curse. From what I’ve explained to you, you can see that it’s pretty easy to take care of the problem yourself for free. Yes, it’s hard to trap spirits against their will effectively using magic, but it’s much easier to set them free. Everything is trying to return to its rightful place. The universe seeks its balance.
