  • #8Sunday Sentences from Space Cowboys & Indians landing July 15

This week’s selection is from my current sci-fi adventure-romance, Space Cowboys & Indians. Think of a movie mashup of Cowboys & Aliens meets Six Days Seven Nights.

Our heroine, Tessa Hernandez, is not impressed with the chances of success of their impending mission. She’s worried. She should be.

    #8Sunday Sentences:

    Janson was late.

Tessa shook her foot nervously under the expansive conference room table while she pored through the mission binder before her. Noah bent over his own binder beside her, his forehead wrinkled in concentration.

    This mission was insanity.

She’d been up in the ship with Noah at the helm a half-dozen times in the past few weeks, testing the prototype. They’d traveled to the Karman line and back like a cosmic basketball drill. It was glorious.

Still, she wouldn’t hold her breath for those golden astronaut wings from NASA, even though she’d now technically earned them. She’d been to the edge of space, which officially made her an astronaut.

SpaceCandIw (533x800)How can the chance of a lifetime go so horribly wrong?

Mining Engineer Cole Hudson signed up for NASA astronaut training, but after washing out short of getting his gold wings, he retreats to Alaska where he stakes out a gold claim. When Billionaire entrepreneur Duncan Janson offers him an opportunity to join a mining team on an asteroid, Cole jumps at the chance.

But nothing is as it seems. Former NASA reject and rival classmate, Tessa Hernandez, is also a member of the team, and from the beginning of the mission test flight, things go  wrong. They soon discover they’re not the only ones on the asteroid. As they try to escape, they are pulled through a wormhole and back to the early 1800s New Mexico desert where aliens and Apaches may be the least of their problems.

  • #8Sunday from Haunt My Heart: Who you gonna call?

This week’s selection is from Haunt My Heart, which releases on January 5, 2015. Haunt My Heart is the story of a hexed Civil War soldier who gets a second chance at life and love after he’s freed from a fetter in modern day Fredericksburg, Virginia.

My eight is a selection from the chapter one ghost hunt. Sarah and Ellie arrived late. Allen, the ghost hunt leader, is frustrated when he learns that it’s been Sarah’s phone setting off the EMF detector and not the ghost they’ve been hunting.

Allen relented, hanging his head, eyes closing briefly as he steeled his patience, most likely deciding any further disturbance of his ghost hunt wasn’t worth it. He handed Sarah’s detector to the grandma. “Before we continue, does anyone else have any devices still powered on? Of any kind? Phone? iPod.” He gave Grandma a second look. “Pacemakers?”

Grandma shook her head no and no one else fessed up to any rule violations. Embarrassed, Sarah wanted to leave. But by the way Ellie coveted her Anomaly Detector like it was the One Ring, she knew there would be no bailing.

Sarah Knight has a job she’s good at, a quirky BFF and a boyfriend who’s bad for her. When Sarah unearths a Civil War artifact on a ghost hunt at Chatham Manor in Fredericksburg, VA, she brings home more than a souvenir.

Lieutenant James “Tanner” Dawson fought for the Union, working as a supernatural liaison for his Major General in a secret Masonic offset called the Brothers of Peril. When he’s hexed by a witch, he learns the only way to save his men is to die himself. But death is not the end. Awakening 150 years later, he knows if he wants to be corporeal again, he has to find true love to break the hex: a task no easier in 21st century than it was in the 19th.

  • #8Sunday – A Reap & Repent Snippet: Demon Whac-A-Mole

In this eight sentence excerpt (creative editing in play) our reaper hero, Deacon, is searching the cemeteries trying to catch Kylen, a demon possessed reaper wreaking havoc in the town of Meridian. His town. Instead of Kylen, he finds yet another demon. Perfect.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

It was quickly becoming a game of Whac-A-Mole; put one demon down, and another popped up.

Could this night get any more fubar?

An added bonus: unlike Deacon, the demon could choose to abandon its body if things went south. It had nothing but a shell to lose. Deacon had a whole hell of a lot more at stake.

Of course, dead was never really dead in the supernatural world. The best he could hope for was that the demon would stream away to the portal to Hell, wherever it was, and disappear like the others. He flicked open his scythe and made his move.

They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.
