  • How a ghost hunt became a book

Spark an idea. Write a book.

Writers are great collectors and hoarders of snippets, conversations, ideas and experiences. You just never know what tiny spark could conflagrate into a raging fire of words. That’s the hope anyway. I keep a physical folder filled with such writerly tinder. I also have ginormous Evernote file filed with news of the weird where I collate stories and potential characters that catch my eye online.

Facebook and Twitter are virtual breeding grounds of stories ideas.

I’m also a big fan of taking advantage of opportunities when they arise because you never know what small or large life experience might one day lead to something amazing, like a 70K novel. That bucket list of yours? Heck, you could write a story about every ONE of those adventures. Of course, I would have to work a monster into it at some point because…well…monsters.

When I got a chance to go on an actual ghost hunt with The Ozarks Paranormal Society (T.O.P.S.)  a couple of years ago. I knew it would be a fantastic opportunity to study the participants and the hunters for potential characters. But it was my husband’s warning that really got my wheels turning.

“What if something follows you home?” he said.

    Hmm…what IF!

I’m sure he was worried about a much more malevolent spirit than Tanner, the hero of Haunt My Heart. Still…what if someone found a haunted object, took it home and then accidentally freed the spirit trapped inside?

And that became the premise for Haunt My Heart.

A spark and then lots of “What if…” questions later, I had a book.

Not that it was all rainbows and unicorns writing it. There were and always will be roadblocks, but Newton’s third law of motion applies to books as well: a book, once in motion, it will remain in motion until you finish or give up.

    Never. Give. Up.

And if you find a shiny object on a ghost hunt…you might think twice before bringing it home. You might come home with something more than a souvenir.

  • A Civil War ghost hero for Veteran’s Day

manIn honor of Veteran’s Day and the upcoming release of Haunt My Heart, I’d like to introduce James “Tanner” Dawson, the hero of my ghost romance.

Writing a romance with a ghost for a hero was a challenge. As you can imagine, there were logistical and communication issues from the start. Thankfully, Tanner and I were equally persistent and determined to make things work. We were equally motivated. I needed to finish a novel and Tanner needed to become and stay corporeal after spending 150 years cursed to his Brother’s of Peril ring.

Tanner was a fictional Union lieutenant in the Civil War. The trouble began for him when he was stationed at Chatham Manor in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1862 just as the U.S. Civil War was gearing up.

Tanner is fictional, but if you’d like to read about some real Civil War heroes, check out the Battle of Fredericksburg or the Fredericksburg Battlefield pages.

cushing photoHere’s a cool story of a real-life Civil War hero recently awarded the Medal of Honor 150 years after his valiant death in battle. Thanks to the persistent doggedness of one 92-year-old fan, 1st Lt. Alonzo Cushing, who died during the Battle of Gettysburg, was recognized last week by President Obama.

    Read his story here:

A Civil War soldier is getting the Medal of Honor. This 94-year-old woman is responsible.
