Thinking of that led her straight down the squirrel path in her mind to their night together. Or few hours, if she wanted to get technical. She’d had the best sex of her life with a virtual stranger and was now a prisoner with her supposed ghost lover in the back of a Men-in-Black car being taken to a secret government location.

    Yeah. That seemed about right.

What she wouldn’t give to have Ellie here right now. She’d have this mess sorted in no time. Sarah fingered the necklace around her throat.

  • #8Sunday from Haunt My Heart: Who you gonna call?

This week’s selection is from Haunt My Heart, which releases on January 5, 2015. Haunt My Heart is the story of a hexed Civil War soldier who gets a second chance at life and love after he’s freed from a fetter in modern day Fredericksburg, Virginia.

My eight is a selection from the chapter one ghost hunt. Sarah and Ellie arrived late. Allen, the ghost hunt leader, is frustrated when he learns that it’s been Sarah’s phone setting off the EMF detector and not the ghost they’ve been hunting.

    HauntMyHeartFinal (533x800) - Copy

Allen relented, hanging his head, eyes closing briefly as he steeled his patience, most likely deciding any further disturbance of his ghost hunt wasn’t worth it. He handed Sarah’s detector to the grandma. “Before we continue, does anyone else have any devices still powered on? Of any kind? Phone? iPod.” He gave Grandma a second look. “Pacemakers?”

Grandma shook her head no and no one else fessed up to any rule violations. Embarrassed, Sarah wanted to leave. But by the way Ellie coveted her Anomaly Detector like it was the One Ring, she knew there would be no bailing.

  • #8Sunday – A Reap & Repent Snippet: Demon Whac-A-Mole

In this eight sentence excerpt (creative editing in play) our reaper hero, Deacon, is searching the cemeteries trying to catch Kylen, a demon possessed reaper wreaking havoc in the town of Meridian. His town. Instead of Kylen, he finds yet another demon. Perfect.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

It was quickly becoming a game of Whac-A-Mole; put one demon down, and another popped up.

Could this night get any more fubar?

An added bonus: unlike Deacon, the demon could choose to abandon its body if things went south. It had nothing but a shell to lose. Deacon had a whole hell of a lot more at stake.

Of course, dead was never really dead in the supernatural world. The best he could hope for was that the demon would stream away to the portal to Hell, wherever it was, and disappear like the others. He flicked open his scythe and made his move.

They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

  • #8Sunday – A Reap & Repent Snippet: A Reaper & His Scythe

In this eight sentence excerpt (creative editing in play) our reaper hero, Deacon, is about face his former friend and fellow reaper turned nemesis. Kylen has been possessed by a demon for the past century. While Deacon’s sure his friend is gone and what he faces now is only the shell, the fact doesn’t make the confrontation any easier. But what needs to be done must be done. Deacon readies himself and brandishes his scythe.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

It was an impressive weapon and would slice through a human, no problem: the weapon of choice for decapitation. If a supernatural beastie needed to be put down, reapers were the ones who did it. A job perk as it were.

The weapon and the reaper were deadly.

He didn’t know if Kylen still held souls, but he instantly regretted the one he carried himself. If the demon was empty, he’d have a powerful advantage on his side. There was one way to find out.

Deacon summoned an aura of protection around himself and slashed his scythe forward.

  • #8Sunday – From Reap & Repent: Some Demons Just Can’t Take A Hint

    #8Sunday…From Reap & Repent

This eight sentence excerpt (don’t beat me, it’s nine) is Ruth’s first trip to Purgatory alone as she waits her turn in line and her third encounter with a demon-possessed reaper who’s been harassing her. She’d warned him off but some demons just can’t take a hint.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

“The first time is always the hardest, isn’t it, love? I could make it so much…more for you,” he whispered, his words bringing new prickly bumps to the surface of her skin.

She shrugged him off, trying to ignore him. She really did, but when he persisted, something fierce and unrelenting rose up in her. She reached back and ran her hand across the front of his jeans and over his hard erection. He hissed in surprise. She gripped him hard in her hand and then squeezed, twisting his business with all she had.

He gave out a little choked cough before breaking free and limping off into the crowd. If the salt had surprised him yesterday, this had shocked him even more.

  • #8Sunday…From Reap & Repent: Dragged to Hell, Erm…Purgatory.

    #8Sunday…From Reap & Repent

This eight sentence excerpt installment follows a scene in which hero Deacon has taken heroine Ruth on her inaugural trip to Purgatory. She’s still trying to process the whole experience back home in her kitchen and begins to demand answers from Deacon who seems more amused than concerned.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

    “It was Purgatory.”

    She whipped around. “What?”

“Purgatory. Not Hell. I dragged you to Purgatory and back. Trust me, babe. If you’d been dragged to Hell and back, you wouldn’t be nearly so feisty.”

  • #8Sunday from Reap & Repent. It’s all fun and games until someone ends up in Purgatory.

    #8Sunday…From Reap & Repent

This is my first Weekend Writing Warriors 8 Sentence Sunday!

Thanks Cara Bristol for recommending it.

This eight sentence excerpt installment follows a scene in which hero Deacon has taken heroine Ruth on her inaugural trip to Purgatory. She’s just landed and this is what she sees:

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

Ruth opened her eyes to complete and utter chaos. There were creatures everywhere. She would have been hard-pressed to prove most of them were now or ever had been human. It was like the cantina scene in Star Wars without the fun band. Ruth’s mouth gaped open. It was dark, foggy and damp in the long underground chamber where they’d landed, like some kind of subterranean cave. She’d never seen anything like it.

It was a depot of sorts, it seemed, and there were long tunnels crisscrossing every which way, disappearing into the stone walls.
