Read & Reviewed: The Charley Davidson Series by Darynda Jones & Why It Took Me So Long To Read It

I write reapers. The grim kind.

Before I started writing reaper stories, I’d never actually read a reaper story, with the exception of Gena Showalter’s The Darkest Kiss, which is the story of Lucien, the Keeper of Death. When I finally decided to take the plunge into writing, I needed a beastie that wasn’t overdone. I liked the idea of the grim reaper and set to build a fictional world in which the collection of souls made sense to me.

Because I was writing about reapers and the world I was creating, I purposely did not read any reaper stories in my genre. I didn’t want to absorb other’s details. The series it was absolutely the most difficult to stay away from was Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series. Those books all but cried to me to be read.

Now that my own writing world of reapers is firmly set across three books, I finally dove into Darynda’s series and Oh. My. God. If you haven’t read them, go! Go right now and start.

Charley is the Stephanie Plum of the supernatural world. And Reyes? Well, you aren’t even going to believe Reyes.

If you don’t know who Stephanie Plum is, you can NOT call yourself a reader. Go read Janet Evanovich’s amazing series, the first is One For The Money. She’s on book twenty-three now in THAT series alone. Read them. Read them all.

I’ve been spending the past few months catching up on Darynda’s grim reaper books. The series is quirky and fun but filled with edge-of-your-seat action. I can’t believe how many plot threads she weaves together in each book.

If you get the opportunity to listen to the audio books they are FANTASTIC. Narrator Lorelei King is the BEST and really brings these stories to life. Be sure to listen to the author interviews at the end of the first few audio books. They are worth it!

These stories are best described as urban fantasy mysteries.

Also, Darynda is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. She even listened to Reap & Repent and did a book blurb for me:

“Lisa Medley is a fascinating storyteller with real talent. Her books are heart-wrenching, alluring, and sexy as hell!”
-NY Times Bestselling Author Darynda Jones.

Thankfully, I’m only halfway through the series and there are still several books yet to savor. Here’s a sampling:

First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1)First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is an amazing first book of the series. Charley’s snarkasm is infectious. I love the world Darynda Jones has built and can’t wait to see what Charley gets up to next! Also… REEEEEEYYYYYYEEEEESSSSSS!

Second Grave on the Left (Charley Davidson, #2)Second Grave on the Left by Darynda Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Charley and Cookie are the most hilarious crime-fighting duo this side of Heaven…or Hell. Either way. How Charley survives her capers is a boggling. It’s almost like she has a guardian angel…or devil. Such a fun series!

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson, #4)Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Another great addition to the Charley Davidson Series. I love these audio books. It astounds me how many intricate plotlines Jones can thread together in one story. She always keeps me guessing until the end. Now, if we could just tame Reyes…

Fifth Grave Past the Light (Charley Davidson, #5)Fifth Grave Past the Light by Darynda Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jones’ intricately entangled plots continue to astound me. Charley’s complicated and hazardous life is filled with adventures and seriously sexy, edge-of-your-seat action. Reyes is turning out to be everything I’d hoped he would…and more.
