  • #8Sunday – A Reap & Repent Snippet: Demon Whac-A-Mole

In this eight sentence excerpt (creative editing in play) our reaper hero, Deacon, is searching the cemeteries trying to catch Kylen, a demon possessed reaper wreaking havoc in the town of Meridian. His town. Instead of Kylen, he finds yet another demon. Perfect.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

It was quickly becoming a game of Whac-A-Mole; put one demon down, and another popped up.

Could this night get any more fubar?

An added bonus: unlike Deacon, the demon could choose to abandon its body if things went south. It had nothing but a shell to lose. Deacon had a whole hell of a lot more at stake.

Of course, dead was never really dead in the supernatural world. The best he could hope for was that the demon would stream away to the portal to Hell, wherever it was, and disappear like the others. He flicked open his scythe and made his move.

They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

  • #8Sunday – A Reap & Repent Snippet: A Reaper & His Scythe

In this eight sentence excerpt (creative editing in play) our reaper hero, Deacon, is about face his former friend and fellow reaper turned nemesis. Kylen has been possessed by a demon for the past century. While Deacon’s sure his friend is gone and what he faces now is only the shell, the fact doesn’t make the confrontation any easier. But what needs to be done must be done. Deacon readies himself and brandishes his scythe.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

It was an impressive weapon and would slice through a human, no problem: the weapon of choice for decapitation. If a supernatural beastie needed to be put down, reapers were the ones who did it. A job perk as it were.

The weapon and the reaper were deadly.

He didn’t know if Kylen still held souls, but he instantly regretted the one he carried himself. If the demon was empty, he’d have a powerful advantage on his side. There was one way to find out.

Deacon summoned an aura of protection around himself and slashed his scythe forward.

  • #8Sunday – A Reap & Repent Snippet: Imps. Why did it have to be imps?

In this eight sentence excerpt (last week’s was nine so this week is seven) Ruth is still plagued by imps–demon minions. Some girls have all the fun.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

Ruth somehow managed to doze off. She awoke to a dark house and what sounded like lightning sizzling on her roof. Leaping up from the couch, she ran to the front door and peered out. Black shapes hurled themselves against the protective circle. Each time they made contact with it, they sizzled and bounced off, deflected like black moths on a giant bug zapper. It was difficult to make their shapes out for a clear identification, but they looked like imps.

         Great.

  • #8Sunday – From Reap & Repent: Some Demons Just Can’t Take A Hint

    #8Sunday…From Reap & Repent

This eight sentence excerpt (don’t beat me, it’s nine) is Ruth’s first trip to Purgatory alone as she waits her turn in line and her third encounter with a demon-possessed reaper who’s been harassing her. She’d warned him off but some demons just can’t take a hint.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

“The first time is always the hardest, isn’t it, love? I could make it so much…more for you,” he whispered, his words bringing new prickly bumps to the surface of her skin.

She shrugged him off, trying to ignore him. She really did, but when he persisted, something fierce and unrelenting rose up in her. She reached back and ran her hand across the front of his jeans and over his hard erection. He hissed in surprise. She gripped him hard in her hand and then squeezed, twisting his business with all she had.

He gave out a little choked cough before breaking free and limping off into the crowd. If the salt had surprised him yesterday, this had shocked him even more.

  • #8Sunday…From Reap & Repent: An Uninvited Guest

This eight sentence excerpt installment follows a scene in which our heroine, Ruth, has just locked up the house tight against any supernatural invasion. Or so she thinks. It’s the little things that get you.

Reap & Repent final revised (647x1024)

Ruth’s eyes sprang open to a clattering racket as something crashed down her chimney, landing on the hearth in front of her in a burst of sooty dust. It took her eyes a few seconds to connect with her brain and formulate a response to the slimiest, foulest-smelling toadlike creature she could ever have imagined. The thing rose from the ashes to its full height of two feet, shook itself like a wet dog, and bared an impressive and terrifying array of needle-pointed, three-inch-long teeth. Its hissing broke Ruth from her paralyzed stupor. She lunged and snatched the iron poker off the face of the fireplace.

Without another thought, she sprang forward and speared the beast through its middle.
It let out a little “humpf,” squatted and dissolved into a smoking pile of gooey, chunky debris on her stone hearth. Ruth’s hands and legs trembled so violently she marveled that she was still vertical.

    What the hell?

  • Snippet Sunday: Reapers Make Poor Housemates

This week’s snippet is from Kylen, the Reaper hero of Reap & Redeem, book two of the Reaper Series. Kylen’s had a hard time adjusting to his new freedom and living conditions. In fact the only thing getting him through most days is the opportunity to kill demons. The more the merrier. Otherwise, he’s not been the best housemate.

    Sunday Snippet:

Reap & Redeem cover“We’ve talked about this, Kylen. Time and again. You know I can’t do it… I can’t bring her back.” Deacon folded his napkin and placed it on the table beside his empty bowl with cautious ease.

    “It’s not a matter of can’t. It’s a matter of won’t.”

“Yes. Won’t. And you know why.”

Kylen’s body radiated power, and he manifested an aura, something reapers only did under extreme circumstances. Mustard-colored flames, indicating pain and anger, licked at his body as he stalked toward Deacon. Ruth held her breath.

He passed by them both without incident and stopped in the middle of the living room, looking down at the symbols of the demon trap, which were still burned into the wooden floor.

Head down, he drew the scythe from the holder that ran the length of his spine and flicked it open with a snap of his wrist. When his gaze rose to meet Deacon’s, he looked like death incarnate. He shimmered and disappeared into the consecrated subway without another word.
