For this trip, he was a glorified FedEx deliveryman. The cargo shuttle lacked the amenities of the passenger ship still under construction, in which Janson would deliver his first patrons in a few short months. The first ship was buried under the reservation. No six-by-six foot bubble viewing windows or luxurious lounge chairs for this ride. The shuttle was stripped down to the necessities, all lash points, cargo straps, and lockers. Tess and Cole were on board the floating Blue Moon Hotel, or at least what there was of it so far. The skeleton staff, who were assembling and working out the kinks before the actual guests arrived, had already taken to calling the project the Lunatic instead. An insider joke that would make Janson piss his marketing pants if he found out.

Ela watched, captivated. She tapped her transcom so she could understand what the characters were saying then eased to the end of the bed and sat. She leaned forward like a ten-year-old, her face less than two feet from the screen.

“This woman. She is a princess?”

    “Yeah, Leia.”

“Her father is a chief?” Ela asked, her eyes round with wonder.

“Erm, not exactly. Her father is Darth Vader. But you aren’t supposed to know that yet.”

Her own father had entrusted him to care for her, yet Ela worried that placing her trust in Noah was not the best decision. The only one she could really trust was herself. At first, she’d been afraid and much too reliant on Noah to take care of her, when she wasn’t his responsibility. She wasn’t his sister or daughter or…wife. And he certainly wasn’t her chief. She could take care of herself. She was an Apache princess. It was time to start acting like one.

TheAstronautsPrincess_200x300Another bit from Chapter One, Episode 2 of my Cosmic Cowboys Series. Nothing worse than a pissed off princess. Poor Noah.

Enjoy a tiny excerpt from The Astronaut’s Princess

Noah sensed the tension the moment he walked through the sliding doors of the sick bay. The doors closed behind him with a whoosh, seemingly sucking the oxygen from the room as they sealed. The bay was in chaos. Broken glass and medical instruments lay scattered across the floor. The entire glass window of the ER room lay in shards before him. He raised his eyebrows, asking the question he already knew the answer to.

    “Ela,” Dr. Alice Franklin said.

“Where is she? Is she injured?”

Dr. Franklin shook her head and motioned to the only closed door. “No, she’s fine. Pissed, but fine.”

  • #8Sunday: Not his circus. Not his monkeys…from THE ASTRONAUT’S PRINCESS #Sexy #SciFi #Adventure

    TheAstronautsPrincess_200x300

It’s been a while since I participated in Weekend Writing Warriors. Here’s what I’ve been working on… Episode 2 of my Cosmic Cowboys Series. Poor Noah has ten thousand problems.

Enjoy a tiny excerpt from The Astronaut’s Princess

This team tested what remained of his patience. The only saving grace was the first crew was already working on the hotel pod construction. This group? These guys wouldn’t have lasted two months in the NASA program. Noah pinched the bridge of his nose, willing the headache pounding behind his eyes to go away.

Not my circus. Not my monkeys.

    Except they were.

The door behind him opened, and Noah closed his eyes tighter, not turning. “Captain? You have a call from sick bay. It’s Ela,” the intern said.

    Of course it’s Ela.

  • Sunday Excerpt from Reap & Reveal

Reveal 3D psd copyI wanted to give you a little taste of REAP & REVEAL, book three, in The Reaper Series but the problem is, I don’t want to REVEAL too much if you’re just starting the series. With that in mind, I thought Chapter Four was reasonably safe.

REAP & REVEAL is available on pre-order now at Amazon and will release next Sunday on Easter. Enjoy!

    Chapter Four

The reaper kitchen was part Animal House, part Army mess hall, and part The Waltons. It was clear to Nate which part the reaper Raguel fell into as he tried to impress the three women of the household by tossing pizza dough into the air.

“You see? Nothing to it. A child could do it.” Ragu caught the dough over his arm and let it slide gently to the granite tabletop.

“A child is doing it,” Samkiel offered, accepting the full wrath of Ragu’s playful glare.

“Ah, but you’ll be begging for more very soon, my friend. Once you’ve had Ragu’s saucy meat and dough, you won’t go back to any other.”

A brief moment of stunned silence followed, and then laughter exploded around the room. It had been a long time since most of them had had anything to laugh about. Even Ruth was in the kitchen tonight, although in a wheelchair, visibly pregnant and under the fierce eye of Temperance, her guardian angel. Or more accurately, the unborn child’s guardian angel.

Even though Ruth was only four-and-a-half months along, she was advancing quickly. Maybe reaper pregnancies were different. Deacon had been no help in that department. Being born himself was his only source of knowledge on the matter. Besides, the guy was scared to death with worry over her most of the time, so even gentle questioning nearly pushed him into full-blown paranoia. Nate had learned to get his answers elsewhere.

He’d been caring for Ruth as best as he could, getting occasional advice from the OBGYN at Oakland Hospital since St. Mary’s Hospital was out of commission. Permanently.

The media has pegged the disaster as an earthquake along the New Madrid fault line. It was the biggest disturbance that had been measured since 1811. The building wasn’t even salvageable and demolition had already begun. The place was sorely missed in the community.

Being at the city’s epicenter, it had also cared for a steady stream of homeless people who were now so far from Oakland’s ER, the EMTs and several off-duty docs and nurses had formed a team of their own to offer triage and minor care in an empty warehouse clinic nearby the former hospital’s location.

Olivia had been a mitigating force behind the group’s formation, and she had even set up a free kitchen that fed the homeless downtown. Kylen had forbidden her to conduct any nighttime visits. Not that Nate could blame him after what had happened the last time she was downtown alone.

Nate sat heavily on a chair, as exhausted as if he hadn’t slept at all. Of course, with those dreams of Maeve, it almost felt as though he hadn’t.

“’Bout time you turned up in here.” Deacon crossed the room and took a seat next to him. “What happened to you last night? We debriefed after everyone got in, but Oreo said he saw you head straight to your trailer. What gives?”

Bo circled, chasing his tail three times around, then settled onto the floor beside him, resting his head on Nate’s lap with a sigh.

Nate threaded his hand through the hellhound’s fur. “Just didn’t feel like recapping a night full of failure.”

“It’s more than that. We need to keep track of how many demons we see, how many we kill, how many are potentially left. We’ve made a real dent these past few months. We need to keep the pressure on. Which means every pair of eyes is important. Yours included.”

Nate felt every pair of said eyes in the compound settle upon him.

“You know Bo and I weren’t looking for demons, Deacon.” Nate stared hard at the reaper.

They’d had this conversation several times. Deacon was the leader of the reapers now. The Powers. But he wasn’t Nate’s boss. Not really, because Nate wasn’t a reaper.

The rest of the Authority crew could now enter and travel through the consecrated subway from unconsecrated ground. They could also consume the unhosted demons, destroying them in a permanent manner as a result of their allegiance to the Authority. And a few had other gifts. Like the ability to transport the wanderers to a holding cell in Purgatory.

Those gifts were a little bit special. While Nate had always been able to travel through the consecrated subway from wherever he pleased, he did not share most of their other gifts. The dreams were new, however, and he needed to tell Deacon about it… Still, he couldn’t bring himself to lay it bare before the entire group.

    “Nate—”

“Don’t start with me, Deacon. If it was Ruth out there, your priorities would be elsewhere, as well.”

“It’s not just that we need you and Bo to track demons for us, Nate. We can’t protect you if you’re out there doing the Lone Ranger thing.”

“Bo is with me. He can protect me. You’ve seen him shred a demon.” Bo gave a little whine in agreement and licked Nate’s pant leg.

“I agree that finding Camael is imperative. It’s your methods that worry me. What will you do if you do find her without us to back you up? Bo may be enough to protect you from a few demons, but you won’t stand a chance against Camael alone. At least stay within sight or sound of one of the teams. Promise me that.”

Nate shook his head. “I don’t make promises I can’t keep.”

    “Dammit, Nate—”

“Pizza’s ready! Dinner…is served.” Ragu pulled a steaming pizza out of the former fireplace turned wood-fired oven to cheers of appreciation.

Nate’s stomach growled. Deacon gave him one last hard look and retreated back to Ruth, filling a plate with pizza for her as he made his way through the food line. Nudging Bo’s twenty-pound head off his lap, Nate joined the back of the line. He was starving.

Ruth’s close encounter with a reaper coma had been all he needed to convince him to take care of himself. So far, knock on wood, he hadn’t needed to replenish anyone since they’d set up the new compound. Even though the other reapers acted like a bunch of frat boys in their free time, they were dead serious about maintaining their health and their strength.

Each had been chosen for their particular skill set by Grim himself and recruited to the Authority. Except for Maeve, who was fairly new, and Ruth, who was brand-spanking-new, the rest of them had been reapers for well over a hundred years each. Deacon and Kylen were two hundred plus some change. The only active reaper older than them was Grim. Yes, the Grim Reaper. Grim had enjoyed the sunset of his career mostly free of demon activity. But now that was in the past.

Thinking of nasty demons brought Nate full circle, back to the puzzle of what to do about Maeve. How was he ever going to be able to anticipate where she would be next? He certainly wasn’t going to be able to capture her and exorcise the angel if he couldn’t lay physical hands on her. Camael was too smart to walk onto a demon trap even if it could hold him. Besides, Nate had only successfully accomplished that once—with a demon. He’d never trapped an angel. Didn’t even know if it was possible.

It had to be possible. After all, for every yin there was a yang, right?

Last in line, he grabbed a slice of pizza and tossed it over to Bo, who snatched it from the air and swallowed it in one gulp.

         Damn, that dog can eat.

Nate piled three more face-sized slices onto his own plate, stacking them like pancakes and headed back to his chair. He almost made it, too.

    Then his head exploded.

  • Drinking and Reaping: Irish whiskey and an impossible task

It’s Sunday…time for a snippet from Chapter Sixteen of Reap & Redeem.

    Reap & Redeem graphic 6

Kylen’s head felt like a legion of imps were beating the shit out of each other inside his skull. No, the Jameson had decidedly not been a good idea, but it was the only way he could have gotten through that list.

Both dreading to see Olivia again and craving it, he couldn’t shake the image of her lying on that bed. Exposed. Vulnerable. Dead.

He’d seen a lot of bad shit in his life.

Done a lot of bad shit. But that was the worst thing since…Kara.

         Fuck.

How many times had he relived her murder in his head?

His mind was a jumble of death and destruction and darkness. How could he have anything to offer Olivia? But it sounded like it was too late for him to make that call. Was he tied to her now? What about when the electric-blue juice stopped working? No way was he watching another woman die on him. His shirt was stiff and crunchy, still caked in blood and gore from their confrontation with the hosts. He was a wreck and he needed a shower.

Walking over to the sink, he took slow, determined steps, careful not to jostle his aching head any more than necessary, and managed to brush his teeth, a minor miracle in itself. Grabbing a change of clothes from the top bunk, he opened the door to the full dark of evening. He’d missed an entire day…again.

How many more days did Olivia have left?

  • “A man needed to respect his weapon.” A Reap & Redeem excerpt.

It’s Sunday…time for a snippet from Chapter Two of Reap & Redeem.

Reap & Redeem graphic 2He squatted in the darkness by the outdoor spigot on the side of the house, letting the water run over his hand and his blade. Pulling a soft cloth from his back pocket, he dipped it into the stream of water before turning off the spigot. He caressed it across the blade, removing the last traces of blood from his scythe, polishing it until the moonlight glinted off its deadly surface.

Satisfied, he crossed to the detached garage and pulled the whetstone down from the tool pegboard. He dragged a bucket outside the garage, overturned it and sat facing the woods. Reaching out with his senses, past the magical circle of protection that was vigilantly defended by Nate, he watched and listened.

There were things out there in the woods. Things that were drawn to him still; things that awaited his command.

He drew the whetstone across the curved blade of his scythe with a slow, easy pressure, stroking its length. He rocked his body forward and back with each rasp of the steel, enjoying the hypnotic rhythm of the work. Honing the scythe to perfection was a comforting task. Turning the blade, he sharpened the other side, careful to return its lethal edge. It was a supernatural weapon, given to each reaper upon his or her first reaping, so the task was unnecessary. Still, it was a ritual he’d performed for years, and it gave him peace in the darkness. A man needed to respect his weapon.

When he was finished, Kylen slashed it into the waist-high weeds before him, watching as they fell to the ground with a whisper. He stared off into the darkness again, resting the blade across his thighs. The night was soothing to him. At night he wasn’t reminded that he could no longer see in color.…
Ever since the demon had been torn from him, he saw the world in shades of gray, and he could no longer make out people’s auras. He could see the light but only its intensity. The color had been stripped from him, which was handicapping him as a reaper. Every reaper worth his or her salt knew that the color gray represented dark thoughts and unclear intentions. Well, that pretty much summed up his inner world these days.
He hadn’t bothered to mention this disturbing fact to any of his roommates.
He had thought it would be a temporary affliction. But now, months later, his color vision still hadn’t returned. It was one more thing that had been stolen from him.
Damaged was an understatement…and he wanted revenge. If he had to, he would find each and every demon himself, making sure Deacon had ample opportunity to send them to their final deaths. Then he would find his own…death, that is.
He was more than ready for it.

  • Reaper Revealed: Olivia’s Bucket List

Olivia, the heroine of Reap & Redeem, is dying. The first thing she did when she found out was make a bucket list. She’s been steadily checking things off that list and is down to the end…of her life and the list.

Do you have a bucket list? What’s on it?

A snippet from Chapter Nine of Reap & Redeem

Reap & Redeem coverOne by one, she’d been ticking off the items on her bucket list. She was down to the last fourteen. Of course, they were the most frightening ones, which was exactly why they were last. Cooking at a homeless shelter was nothing compared to #53 and #58: get drunk and have a one-night stand.

    She shuddered.

The idea of a bucket list had seemed so wonderful at first. Essential even. As she’d ticked her way through the list, she was surprised by how easy most of them were to achieve. Of course, her wishes weren’t too exotic. No running with the bulls in Pamplona, swimming with sharks in South Africa, or other such craziness. And she had no intention of leaving a trail of unpaid debt behind despite her former coworker’s suggestion that she charge everything to a credit card, Visa be damned. Her parents would have been so disappointed with her if she’d even considered such a thing. In preparing for her death, she’d proceeded as cautiously as she always had in life, with the notable exception of #53 and #58.

  • Reapers Revealed: Heads Are Rolling – A Snippet From Reap & Redeem

We’re closing in on the Oct. 6 Release Day for Reap & Redeem, book two of the Reaper Series. Let’s get this party started with a scene from Chapter One where heads are already rolling.

    Reap & Redeem coverChapter One

Kylen kicked the head across the floor of the dark shed with his steel-toed boot. Blood dripped into a pool on the floor from his scythe, which he still gripped tightly with one hand. He straightened to his full height and tilted his neck from side to side, listening to his spine crack and pop. Another demon down.

“You don’t have to keep killing them yourself, you know,” Deacon said, grimacing at the black ooze spilling out of the severed neck.

“Yeah, I do.” Kylen turned and walked to the door, taking a quick survey of the cemetery. A dark, sticky trail marked his course.

“You have to admit, he’s efficient.” Nate picked up the head by the hair and dropped it into a black garbage bag.

“That’s one way to look at it.” Deacon pressed his hand, which was glowing with Reiki energy, to the center of the dead male’s chest, directly over his heart chakra.

Kylen watched as light radiated from Deacon, encasing him and the body in a soft glow. The demon boiled forth from the dead human host in a thick black torrent of sulfurous haze. Spreading his arms wide, Deacon summoned the stream, which penetrated through his sternum. His body shuddered and the light around him sparked and cracked like the arc of a welder. The glow intensified to supernova status before winking out. Several smaller streams of gray light flowed forth from the ruined body, too, entering through Deacon’s mouth.

“Well? Did you retrieve all the souls?” Nate lifted the feet and legs of the body onto the tarp he’d set beside it.

    Deacon frowned. “Yes.”

    “How many?”

“Three.” Deacon rose and grasped the body by the shoulders, helping Nate maneuver it. “And the demon.”

“I really hate this shit.” Nate said, pulling a spool of duct tape from his backpack.
They rolled the man tightly in the tarp, taping both ends so that none of the bodily fluids would discharge in transit.

“How many more demons do you think there are?” Nate wrapped the head in a plastic bag and walked toward the door.

“Grim thinks there are at least two dozen more,” Deacon reminded him.
“Great. Slow and steady wins the race, yeah?”

“I’m not sure we have the luxury of slow and steady anymore. At this rate, we’re never going to find them all. There’s already way too much collateral damage. This many missing humans in town won’t go unnoticed much longer. We need to find their exit portals and shut down the rest of the demons. Sooner would be better than later.”

Kylen waited in the doorway, dividing his attention between the business in the shed and the cemetery grounds. Deacon was right of course. They needed to close the portals. Permanently. As it was, they were playing a game of supernatural Whac-A-Mole. Close one portal and another popped up. New entrance portals continued to open each week, which then had to be closed by Grim and Deacon. And while one batch of demons gathered their fill of souls before sliding down the small one-way shoots to Hell—the exit portals, the next batch waited for their chance. It had become a never-ending battle and the reapers needed to press on.

They didn’t bother cleaning up the black ooze or the blood trail. The only way to make sure the scene was completely clean was fire, but arson would be sure to draw more attention to the mower garage by the edge of the cemetery than a few stains that could easily be oil or fuel. None of them were concerned about the law. There were far worse things for them to worry about.

They’d burn the body at home, and then bury the ashes and bits of bone. Just as they’d dealt with the other eleven. This host’s disappearance would never be explained. Good thing, since the guy’s head was detached.
