Reveal 3D psd copyI wanted to give you a little taste of REAP & REVEAL, book three, in The Reaper Series but the problem is, I don’t want to REVEAL too much if you’re just starting the series. With that in mind, I thought Chapter Four was reasonably safe.

REAP & REVEAL is available on pre-order now at Amazon and will release next Sunday on Easter. Enjoy!

    Chapter Four

The reaper kitchen was part Animal House, part Army mess hall, and part The Waltons. It was clear to Nate which part the reaper Raguel fell into as he tried to impress the three women of the household by tossing pizza dough into the air.

“You see? Nothing to it. A child could do it.” Ragu caught the dough over his arm and let it slide gently to the granite tabletop.

“A child is doing it,” Samkiel offered, accepting the full wrath of Ragu’s playful glare.

“Ah, but you’ll be begging for more very soon, my friend. Once you’ve had Ragu’s saucy meat and dough, you won’t go back to any other.”

A brief moment of stunned silence followed, and then laughter exploded around the room. It had been a long time since most of them had had anything to laugh about. Even Ruth was in the kitchen tonight, although in a wheelchair, visibly pregnant and under the fierce eye of Temperance, her guardian angel. Or more accurately, the unborn child’s guardian angel.

Even though Ruth was only four-and-a-half months along, she was advancing quickly. Maybe reaper pregnancies were different. Deacon had been no help in that department. Being born himself was his only source of knowledge on the matter. Besides, the guy was scared to death with worry over her most of the time, so even gentle questioning nearly pushed him into full-blown paranoia. Nate had learned to get his answers elsewhere.

He’d been caring for Ruth as best as he could, getting occasional advice from the OBGYN at Oakland Hospital since St. Mary’s Hospital was out of commission. Permanently.

The media has pegged the disaster as an earthquake along the New Madrid fault line. It was the biggest disturbance that had been measured since 1811. The building wasn’t even salvageable and demolition had already begun. The place was sorely missed in the community.

Being at the city’s epicenter, it had also cared for a steady stream of homeless people who were now so far from Oakland’s ER, the EMTs and several off-duty docs and nurses had formed a team of their own to offer triage and minor care in an empty warehouse clinic nearby the former hospital’s location.

Olivia had been a mitigating force behind the group’s formation, and she had even set up a free kitchen that fed the homeless downtown. Kylen had forbidden her to conduct any nighttime visits. Not that Nate could blame him after what had happened the last time she was downtown alone.

Nate sat heavily on a chair, as exhausted as if he hadn’t slept at all. Of course, with those dreams of Maeve, it almost felt as though he hadn’t.

“’Bout time you turned up in here.” Deacon crossed the room and took a seat next to him. “What happened to you last night? We debriefed after everyone got in, but Oreo said he saw you head straight to your trailer. What gives?”

Bo circled, chasing his tail three times around, then settled onto the floor beside him, resting his head on Nate’s lap with a sigh.

Nate threaded his hand through the hellhound’s fur. “Just didn’t feel like recapping a night full of failure.”

“It’s more than that. We need to keep track of how many demons we see, how many we kill, how many are potentially left. We’ve made a real dent these past few months. We need to keep the pressure on. Which means every pair of eyes is important. Yours included.”

Nate felt every pair of said eyes in the compound settle upon him.

“You know Bo and I weren’t looking for demons, Deacon.” Nate stared hard at the reaper.

They’d had this conversation several times. Deacon was the leader of the reapers now. The Powers. But he wasn’t Nate’s boss. Not really, because Nate wasn’t a reaper.

The rest of the Authority crew could now enter and travel through the consecrated subway from unconsecrated ground. They could also consume the unhosted demons, destroying them in a permanent manner as a result of their allegiance to the Authority. And a few had other gifts. Like the ability to transport the wanderers to a holding cell in Purgatory.

Those gifts were a little bit special. While Nate had always been able to travel through the consecrated subway from wherever he pleased, he did not share most of their other gifts. The dreams were new, however, and he needed to tell Deacon about it… Still, he couldn’t bring himself to lay it bare before the entire group.

    “Nate—”

“Don’t start with me, Deacon. If it was Ruth out there, your priorities would be elsewhere, as well.”

“It’s not just that we need you and Bo to track demons for us, Nate. We can’t protect you if you’re out there doing the Lone Ranger thing.”

“Bo is with me. He can protect me. You’ve seen him shred a demon.” Bo gave a little whine in agreement and licked Nate’s pant leg.

“I agree that finding Camael is imperative. It’s your methods that worry me. What will you do if you do find her without us to back you up? Bo may be enough to protect you from a few demons, but you won’t stand a chance against Camael alone. At least stay within sight or sound of one of the teams. Promise me that.”

Nate shook his head. “I don’t make promises I can’t keep.”

    “Dammit, Nate—”

“Pizza’s ready! Dinner…is served.” Ragu pulled a steaming pizza out of the former fireplace turned wood-fired oven to cheers of appreciation.

Nate’s stomach growled. Deacon gave him one last hard look and retreated back to Ruth, filling a plate with pizza for her as he made his way through the food line. Nudging Bo’s twenty-pound head off his lap, Nate joined the back of the line. He was starving.

Ruth’s close encounter with a reaper coma had been all he needed to convince him to take care of himself. So far, knock on wood, he hadn’t needed to replenish anyone since they’d set up the new compound. Even though the other reapers acted like a bunch of frat boys in their free time, they were dead serious about maintaining their health and their strength.

Each had been chosen for their particular skill set by Grim himself and recruited to the Authority. Except for Maeve, who was fairly new, and Ruth, who was brand-spanking-new, the rest of them had been reapers for well over a hundred years each. Deacon and Kylen were two hundred plus some change. The only active reaper older than them was Grim. Yes, the Grim Reaper. Grim had enjoyed the sunset of his career mostly free of demon activity. But now that was in the past.

Thinking of nasty demons brought Nate full circle, back to the puzzle of what to do about Maeve. How was he ever going to be able to anticipate where she would be next? He certainly wasn’t going to be able to capture her and exorcise the angel if he couldn’t lay physical hands on her. Camael was too smart to walk onto a demon trap even if it could hold him. Besides, Nate had only successfully accomplished that once—with a demon. He’d never trapped an angel. Didn’t even know if it was possible.

It had to be possible. After all, for every yin there was a yang, right?

Last in line, he grabbed a slice of pizza and tossed it over to Bo, who snatched it from the air and swallowed it in one gulp.

         Damn, that dog can eat.

Nate piled three more face-sized slices onto his own plate, stacking them like pancakes and headed back to his chair. He almost made it, too.

    Then his head exploded.

  • Reaper Redux: Heaven, Hell & the In-Between

Talking about world-building today again and some of the settings of the Reaper series.

    grand-central-station-i8040

    Purgatory

This is the angel Rashnu’s domain. Rashnu is the sorter who sends the reaped souls to their final destinations after reapers deposit their cargo via a tube-like system inside Purgatory. There are many tunnels and tubes in the stone walls of Purgatory all leading to different destinations and levels of Heaven or Hell. Imagine if you will Grand Central Station completely underground and encased in stone. That’s Purgatory. There’s even a Star Wars-esque cantina where reapers—all sorts of reapers—can have a drink and share war stories.  Purgatory is members only and patrons need to be carrying a soul to enter or a.

     Excerpt from Reap & Repent

“Ruth opened her eyes to complete chaos. There were creatures everywhere. She would have been hard pressed to prove most of them were now or ever had been human. It was like the Cantina scene in Star Wars without the fun band. Ruth’s mouth gaped open. It was dark, foggy and damp in the long unground cave-like chamber. She’d never seen anything like it.

It was a depot of sorts with long tunnels crisscrossing and disappearing into the stone walls. The floors and ceilings were also rough stone and light from an unseen source emanated down through strategically positioned skylight structures along the ceiling. Creatures were everywhere. A scant minority of the occupants appeared to be human. There was so much to take in it was overwhelming. Chiseled placards demarked the top of each tunnel in a language she didn’t understand. At both ends of the main channel huge platforms rose above the fray and what looked like an angel, complete with a flowing purple robe, sat upon a stone throne.”

    Heaven

Most of the story takes place on the earthly realm, Purgatory and Hell. We don’t get to see Heaven but we know there are levels of Heaven just like there are levels of Hell. One passes through them on their way to perfection.

Certainly something to strive for and about a bazillion times better than the alternative.

    Hell

The fallen angel Lucifer is the King of Hell. He has a palace and everything. You’ll get to see quite a lot of it actually.

The trip there: Excerpt from Reap & Repent

“They spun and sputtered through a long tunnel of red strobing light that made Ruth’s head hurt. Her stomach turned as she tried to close her eyes, but the light strobed against her retinas as intensely whether open or closed. They seemed to slide through the tunnel forever. It was much longer than was comfortable or than she ever traveled on her trips to Purgatory. A carnival ride gone bad.

When she was sure she was going to vomit, they crashed to a stop at a dusty crossroads. Red fog hung low as far as she could see which wasn’t very far at all. Nate landed hard but stood up quickly, dusting the red clay off his jeans. Kylen frowned as he looked down the road towards the red glow in the cloud-covered covered horizon.”

What they see when they arrive: Excerpt from Reap & Repent

They walked on for what seemed like several miles, enveloped in their manufactured auras. Nate maintained his with only an occasional push or touch from Ruth. He was getting stronger despite his reluctance to admit it. His calling was still unclear, but he’d already proven himself useful more than once with the powers he had. Who knew what other resources lay within him, waiting to emerge.

There was nowhere left to hide, and the closer they came to the palace, the fog began to dissipate. The place looked like an impenetrable fortress, complete with a moat of what appeared to be flowing lava.

    Wonderful, Ruth thought.

A guard stood post at the main entrance. It was small and toadlike, an imp like the one Ruth had run through with a fire poker in her living room only a few days ago. It seemed like an inadequate guardian for such a tremendous palace, but then again, Ruth assumed that not too many folks were hot to visit this place of their own accord.

They see death. Can they share a life?

Ruth Scott can read the energy of every person she meets. Then she meets Deacon Walker. She can see his ice-blue eyes, his black hair, and his gorgeous face. But this beautiful stranger has no aura.

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

  • Reaper Redux: The Daily Commute and Other Wonders

    world

One of the coolest things about writing fiction, urban fantasy and paranormal romance in particular, is worldbuilding. If you’ve ever wanted to be Queen of the Universe. This is your chance.

The world of Reap & Repent opens up before Ruth Scott, and she must learn to navigate it with only days of training, not years like most reapers enjoy. Under Deacon’s tutelage, here are a few things she learned along the way.

    Talk about trial by fire.

Consecrated Subway: This is the way supernatural entities travel (reapers especially). Reapers can travel from consecrated ground to consecrated ground through the invisible tunneled ‘subway’ by concentrating on where they want to be. Reapers can travel short or great distances if strong enough and with practice.

    Excerpt from Reap & Repent

“Think about where you want to be, say the hallway where we ran into each other at the hospital. You’ll pop into the consecrated ground that’s closest to that location. From there you’ll have to hoof it.”

“That seems very inconvenient. Why can’t you take a bike or car or something with you?”

“You can take with you whatever you can carry, within reason. A car? No. A bike, sure…but then what are you going to do with a bike in the middle of a hospital?” he asked, caressing her arms absently. “You’re making it more complicated than it needs to be. You aren’t going to have a problem here. You’ll see.”

Sleepers: Lost, unreaped souls often missed because they died violently and were buried or lost to odd locations. AKA haunts. Finding a sleeper is rare and akin to the whole needle/haystack scenario. Deacon’s only ever found two, and he’s been a reaper for more than two hundred years.

    Excerpt from Reap & Repent

He really didn’t want to make this trip very many times. If she didn’t show up, he’d have to track her down another way, but that would take even more time. Time he couldn’t afford to waste. Souls piled up if you weren’t diligent. And while the souls of the newly dead pulled at him, that feeling began to fade after a day, or sometimes even a few hours, making them more difficult to track down. If too much time went by, it was all but impossible to find them unless you practically stumbled upon them. The lost and lingering souls were called sleepers. He’d found a few in his day, but it was like picking a needle out of a haystack.

Potentiates: aka The Powers inhabit the perilous border between the realms of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory as a sort of border guard, protecting human souls from devilish infiltration. Potentiates have been inactive for a couple millennia.

Purgatory: Where all souls are sorted and sent to either Heaven or Hell. The underground Grand Central Station of soul deposit complete with a Star Wars-esque cantina. Rashnu presides here. Do not mess with Rashnu.

    Excerpt from Reap & Repent

Deacon leaned over and whispered, “Try not to freak out—this will get easier. This is Purgatory—a way station. It’s a neutral zone. A no man’s land of sorts. All reapers can meet here and interact, but there can be no conflict. It’s a forced détente essentially. Pray you don’t see most of these creatures on the topside.”

She couldn’t imagine any situation where she would.

Don’t fear the reapers. My reapers are hot, hot, hot. You may not be that sad to meet one someday.

  • Reaper Redux: Reapers See Dead People the Reiki & Aura Chart

How do reapers know when a soul has passed or is about to?

    reaper aura 1

Reapers are adeptly tuned in to human auras. While reading the emotional state of the humans they deal with on a regular basis can be helpful, the white aura is the most important color for reapers. White is the death aura.

A few hours, or sometimes even days, before a human passes, his aura will become void of color and radiate a bright white glow around his body.  For reapers on regular rounds, this is very helpful. Most reapers cover basic circuits of death, searching for their next soul: graveyards, funeral homes, hospitals, and accident scenes etc. They collect souls as they pass and ferry them to Purgatory for processing by Rashnu, an angel so arrogant he duplicated himself to maintain complete control of Purgatory.

Not only are the colors of auras important, but the manipulation of those auras through Reiki gives reapers a distinct advantage in their jobs. Reaper Reiki is the manipulation of a person’s life-force energy to either heal or alter another’s injury or emotional state. The result of such efforts is visible to reapers but not most humans. It can be used on humans to push their minds or heal but too much can fry their fragile psyches and is utilized on the masses with extreme caution. Reapers routinely practice energy sharing at full force.

Interestingly, reapers do not manifest an aura themselves unless under extreme circumstances or agitation. Otherwise, any aura manifestation is temporary and dependent upon the Reiki being shared or administered.

The following guide was adapted from and credited to http://thiaoouba.com/see_aura_color.htm if you’re interested in non-fiction study of auras.

For the purposes of The Reaper Series, they are as follows:

Aura Color Quick Glossary: credit to http://thiaoouba.com/see_aura_color.htm

Meaning of Clean Colors of the Aura

White: Serious disease, impending death. Increases in intensity and brightness the nearer to death.

Blue: Sustaining life, transmitting forces and energy. Electric blue can override any other color.

Turquoise: Dynamic, highly energized, capable of projection and influence.

Green: Restful, modifying energy, natural healing ability.

Excerpt & Example from Reap & Repent:

Ruth could see the glow from Deacon before she felt it. His entire body lit up, and he placed a warm hand over her forehead and another across her stomach. As his hands hovered over her body, a warm gush of green energy flowed through her entire body before settling inside her injured leg.

Deacon’s light radiated so bright and clear that it stung her eyes to look at him. A tear slid down her cheek.

In an instant, the pain began to fade. A mantra played through her mind: Thank God, thank God, thank God.

Deacon held her in his light energy for what seemed like hours, letting it massage its way through her. It was so blissful and intimate that she didn’t want it to end. Her leg began to itch and cool, and when she opened her eyes and glanced down at it, the swelling had dissipated and the color was back to normal.

    chakras

Yellow: Joy, freedom, non-attachment, freeing or releasing vital forces.

Orange: Ability or desire to control others, exercising power.

Excerpt & Example from Reap & Repent:

A soft orange glow radiated from Deacon’s hands. It shimmered and rose from him in waves like the heat off an amusement park’s asphalt in August. But instead of heat, a cold, edgy blast built around them, increasing until the ground trembled and shifted. The next thing she knew, she was looking at a husk of gray light glistening and forming into something that looked remarkably like her father. The apparition hovered over the grave before them. Deacon had somehow wrenched her father from his grave—or at least a part of him.

    His soul?

    Gold: Indicates a spiritual teacher.

Red: Materialistic thoughts or thoughts about the physical body.

Pink: Love, perfect balance of spiritual and materialistic awareness.

Meaning of Dirty Colors of the Aura

Brown: Unsettling, distracting, materialistic, negating spirituality.

Gray: Dark thoughts, depressing thoughts, unclear intentions, presence of a dark side of personality.

Sulfur (color of mustard): Pain or lack of ease, anger.

Excerpt & Example from Reap & Repent:

Nate was sitting in his wing chair drinking coffee, which smelled like a piece of heaven in a cup. He was clearly waiting for them, and his aura radiated from him in spicy mustard waves. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to guess that he was pissed. She couldn’t blame him. She wondered for a moment if he was angry because they’d been making out in his bed, or if the whole strange situation had gotten to him. It didn’t take long to find out.

  • Reaper Redux: The rules of reaping

Every job has rules employees must follow. Reaping is no different. Wait, yeah, it’s a lot different. But there are still rules.

A reaper’s sole job is to collect and carry souls to Purgatory for sorting. They have territories they cover. Most work alone. Occasionally, there are complications, and that is how The Reaper Series was born.

In book one, Reap & Repent, reapers must adhere to the basic tenets of reaping, which include but are not limited to the following:

    • There are reapers for every species supernatural and otherwise, not one Santa Claus of Death, although Grim is a real reaper.
    • Reapers are immortal as long as their life energy isn’t completely diminished beyond recovery, and they keep their heads. Literally. Decapitation is a deal breaker and permanent death.
    • Reapers are the perfect vessel for demons because they can hold many, many more souls and don’t burn out from the toxic demon essence. It took a while for this to be discovered.
    • Reapers can share Reiki light energy to heal one another or manipulate the auras/actions of humans when necessary. Not recommended for extensive use on humans as it fries their brains and psyches over the long term.
    • The more energy shared with/by reapers, the stronger the bond
    • Reapers are born to supernatural reaper parents. They are in effect their own species like angels or demons etc. but appear human with enhanced abilities, which continue to manifest throughout their lives.
    • Reapers stop aging at the time of their first successful solo reaping and continue virtually immortal.
    • Reapers cannot procreate if they have been traveling the consecrated subway or reaping souls. Must be inactive on both accounts for many, many months (up to a year) before they are fertile again, and then reaper mothers must refrain from traveling/reaping until the child is born.
    • Reapers are raised and trained from birth to fulfill their job and destiny.

Being a reaper isn’t all rainbows and unicorns on a good day. But when demons invade the realm? There’s a good chance it could all go to Hell.

  • Heavenly Hierarchy of The Reaper Series

    Go ahead. Google ‘heavenly hierachy’.

    It’s a mess isn’t it?

    1,110,000 results.

No one agrees about who does what or is responsible for what or protects, overseas, exists who/what/where.

Much like Congress, if you want to know the truth.

It’s actually a miracle in itself anything EVER gets done…in Heaven or on Earth.

And do you know why that is? Because no one KNOWS the truth. It’s all part of the great mystery of life…and afterlife.

Except Congress. It’s a mystery for which there may be no more truth. But I digress…

Much of my Reaper Series research, background and inspiration came from one book:

Angels: An Endangered Species by Malcom Godwin

    download (1)

I found just enough there to use as a springboard, bending those bits and pieces to my own god-like will and creating a world for my reapers.

As in any world, including our own immediate one, there are rules, bureaucracies and hierarchies. As much as we hate it, some are always at the top while others are on the bottom. My reapers are heavenly hosts, not quite angels but certainly not human either. They exist in the in-between but aspire to transcend to angelic status at the end of their journey.

Following Malcom Godwin’s example for my own fictional world, here’s what they have to look forward to:

    Highest Triad

    1. Seraphim 2. Cherubim 3. Thrones

    Middle Triad

    4. Dominations 5. Virtues 6. Powers

    Lowest Triad

    7. Principalities 8. Archangels 9. Angels

    The In-Between

    Reapers

    Earth

    Humans

Of course there is an equal but opposite hierarchy down below (Hell) as is above. Think Dante’s Circles of Hell. But more on that in another post.

The thing about this hierarchy is that the Divine Core (God) is the center and the light. The farther the heavenly hosts fan out from the center power, the farther they are from the Divine source of light and love.

I’m sure you can imagine all sorts of problems with that setup: miscommunications, failures of faith, bureaucracies.

For all things reaper in the first three books of the Reaper Series, our heroes are most concerned with the Powers in books one and two. Things get more complicated in book three and by book four…all bets are off. Heaven’s neat little caste system is about to be turned on its end as the threat from below grows stronger.

As long as there is good…there is evil: the great balancer of the universe.

The question is… Which will win in the end?

To get the whole story, start with Reap & Repent:

The only thing worse than having nothing to live for…is having everything to live for.

  • Grave Discoveries: Shawnee Bend Cemetery

This is such a neat old cemetery along the Lake of the Ozarks. It’s old, shady and unexpected.

Want to know where the bodies are buried? You can discover it here at FIND A GRAVE.

There are several broken stones. Some have been patched back together. I think it just adds to the character of the cemetery.

    A handshake engraving

    Another similar handshake.

    A nice dove.

    .

I really appreciate the practicality of these multiple/two-sided markers. One gets a hand pointing to Heaven and the other gets the Lamb of God. It’s hard to tell but I think the hand pointing to Heaven is a mother and the Lamb of God says infant on the top. I can’t tell if they both died in childbirth or not, but wouldn’t be surprised.

This is clever use of stones to make both a marker and a planter. I approve.

    .

    Another interesting planter-style memorial marker.

Finally, this was the oldest stone I found in the cemetery. Born 1791! Died 1819.

Seeing a stone from someone born in the 18th century that’s not in a museum is amazing to me.

Speaking of cemeteries. Did you know that reapers travel from consecrated ground to consecrated ground through and invisible network called the consecrated subway? It’s true. Just one of the amazing details of the the Reaper Series.
