All her life Ruth Scott, has been able to read the energy of every person she meets. She can read their auras. Each color represents a different emotion, yellow is happy, green is peaceful, and the worst is white, which means death. Now she finds herself in a hospital where her mother, her last living relative is dying. All her life Ruth and her mother have been at odds. When she first told her mother about seeing other people’s auras, her mother turned away from her.

When Ruth lost her father, she lost the only person who really loved her. Since his death she and her mother have been estranged, but she will not let her mother die alone. After her mother dies, she leaves to make arrangements for her funeral when she knocks into a man, Deacon Walker, a reaper and on the way to retrieve Ruth’s mother’s soul. It hits her right away that the man has no aura and she isn’t sure what that means. In the meantime, Deacon realizes Ruth is more than a human since she, too, has no aura. It is possible she is a reaper like him, but is totally in the dark about what she is?

Deacon ushers souls to purgatory, at the same time he battles demons who try to poach souls to take to Hell. He has to find Ruth and figure out what she is. If she is a reaper, he has to train her. With more and more demons showing up, they can use all the reapers they can get. When Deacon confronts Ruth, she realizes her life will never be the same. When Deacon discovers Ruth was adopted, it becomes clear why she was never told about what she is.

Deacon takes Ruth on her first trip to purgatory to indoctrinate her about her new position. While there, they run into Kylen. Kylen and Deacon were once best friends, until Kylen made a deal with a demon. He was willing to allow the demon to inhabit his body if the woman he loved, Kara’s, soul was sent to purgatory instead of Hell. When she was killed, the demon managed to procure her soul before Deacon or one of the other reapers could. He made a deal with the devil, and now he is lost to Deacon. Deacon has never given up hope he can save his friend.

Deacon and Ruth enlist the help of Nate, a witch who is able to place a protective shield around Ruth’s house. Once Kylen discovered Ruth’s importance to Deacon, she became a target. Deacon and Ruth fall in love, but they are constantly fighting off demons. When Deacon is taken to Hell, Ruth knows she needs Nate and Kylen to free him. But first they have to free Kylen from the demon. Ruth has a lot ahead of her and she needs to learn about being a reaper very quickly, because time is not on her side.

I loved this story and especially the characters. There was romance, sex, demons, angels, reapers, and even a witch. It was a constant battle of good against evil and war is on the horizon. In spite of it all, there was always a touch of humor. There were also some tense scenes, especially those that take place in Hell. The author does a great job of scaring the heck out of you with her description of Hell. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to start the next one. There is no cliffhanger, and to that I say HOORAY!

    Novel: Reap & Redeem

    Series: Reaper – Book 2

    Author: Lisa Medley

    Publisher: Harlequin

    Genre: Urban Fantasy/Romance

    Rating: Adult

In book two of the Reaper series, we are once again reunited with Nate, Ruth, Deacon, and Kylen, who was finally freed from the demon who had possessed him. Ruth and Nate were able to save Kylen, only in this book we learn what his freedom meant to him and how he is handling it. He was possessed for a hundred years, so it is unknown if the evil he lived with is completely gone. Does he still have a link to the dark side?

Now that he is free, he has only two desires, a death wish and revenge. He has become a demon killing machine and killing them is all he has left. He still mourns for Kara, the woman whose soul he saved when he allowed the demon to possess his body. He is also angry with Deacon, the man who was his best friend. Deacon had promised to never allow a demon to take control of his body. He would do his best to kill the demon and release Kylen from his possession, only it was something Deacon couldn’t get himself to do because he never stopped believing he could save his friend.

One night Kylen hears screams coming from an alley. When he arrives, there is a demon about to possess a girl. Kylen saves her life and brings her to Ruth’s house where it doesn’t take long for them to realize she is surrounded by a white aura and is near death. Her name is Olivia and she has a rare form of bone cancer that is killing her. Since his freedom, Kylen has lost his ability to see auras and can no longer see colors. His world is all in shades of grays until he holds Olivia’s hand. When he touches her, he realizes that he is giving her his energy. He, in turn, can see the colors around him. When he is not touching her his world is once again gray.

Nate, Ruth, and Deacon are now all living together and Kylen has a trailer outside their house. He still feels a connection to Hell and to the Imps that keep following him and taking his orders. Is he willing to give himself over to good? Is he still fighting not going back to the evil he lived with for one hundred years?

Deacon has been promoted and is now able to consume the demons. They can finally be destroyed before taking a new body. War is coming; more and more demons are showing up. Portals are popping up all over and the Reapers are having a tough time fighting them all. In spite of the infusions of energy from Kylen, Olivia is losing her battle with cancer. Once again is filled with anger. How can the powers that be allow her to fall into his life and then make him care about her? Is he once again going to have to watch a woman he cares about die?

There is trouble brewing. Evil is trying to take over and good is fighting them tooth and nail. On the brighter side, Ruth is pregnant and a new life is on its way. I loved watching Kylen’s fight to not give into his dark side. I loved watching how he tried desperately not to fall in love with a woman who he knows he will soon lose. Nate has become part of the family and is joining in the fight in any way he can. Although there is no doubt the book will continue to follow all the characters the book does have a good ending.

  • Drinking and Reaping: Irish whiskey and an impossible task

It’s Sunday…time for a snippet from Chapter Sixteen of Reap & Redeem.

    Reap & Redeem graphic 6

Kylen’s head felt like a legion of imps were beating the shit out of each other inside his skull. No, the Jameson had decidedly not been a good idea, but it was the only way he could have gotten through that list.

Both dreading to see Olivia again and craving it, he couldn’t shake the image of her lying on that bed. Exposed. Vulnerable. Dead.

He’d seen a lot of bad shit in his life.

Done a lot of bad shit. But that was the worst thing since…Kara.

         Fuck.

How many times had he relived her murder in his head?

His mind was a jumble of death and destruction and darkness. How could he have anything to offer Olivia? But it sounded like it was too late for him to make that call. Was he tied to her now? What about when the electric-blue juice stopped working? No way was he watching another woman die on him. His shirt was stiff and crunchy, still caked in blood and gore from their confrontation with the hosts. He was a wreck and he needed a shower.

Walking over to the sink, he took slow, determined steps, careful not to jostle his aching head any more than necessary, and managed to brush his teeth, a minor miracle in itself. Grabbing a change of clothes from the top bunk, he opened the door to the full dark of evening. He’d missed an entire day…again.

How many more days did Olivia have left?

Twilight Cemetery is behind the Twilight Church and overlooks I-44 just outside of Phillipsburg, MO. I drive by it several times a week. Want to know where the bodies are buried?

Check out Find-A-Grave.It was an older cemetery than I had expected. Handshake engravings seemed to dominate.

I love when the top half of broken stones are leaned against the remaining marker. Arts and creepy all at once.In the use-what-you’ve-got vein, this marker is a big ass rock cairn. Practical if not descriptive.I liked this one a lot.Tiny stone, big plant. Works for me.And these? Just lots and lots of rock markers. I have no idea how they know who was ever buried there. I suppose now it doesn’t really matter.A book-of-life marker. I like the symbolism of starting the next chapter.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

  • Reaper Revealed: Olivia’s Bucket List

Olivia, the heroine of Reap & Redeem, is dying. The first thing she did when she found out was make a bucket list. She’s been steadily checking things off that list and is down to the end…of her life and the list.

Do you have a bucket list? What’s on it?

A snippet from Chapter Nine of Reap & Redeem

Reap & Redeem coverOne by one, she’d been ticking off the items on her bucket list. She was down to the last fourteen. Of course, they were the most frightening ones, which was exactly why they were last. Cooking at a homeless shelter was nothing compared to #53 and #58: get drunk and have a one-night stand.

    She shuddered.

The idea of a bucket list had seemed so wonderful at first. Essential even. As she’d ticked her way through the list, she was surprised by how easy most of them were to achieve. Of course, her wishes weren’t too exotic. No running with the bulls in Pamplona, swimming with sharks in South Africa, or other such craziness. And she had no intention of leaving a trail of unpaid debt behind despite her former coworker’s suggestion that she charge everything to a credit card, Visa be damned. Her parents would have been so disappointed with her if she’d even considered such a thing. In preparing for her death, she’d proceeded as cautiously as she always had in life, with the notable exception of #53 and #58.

  • Reapers Revealed: Anger Management – A #Snippet from Reap & Redeem

Dark hero and reaper, Kylen, has issues. Big ones. But give the guy a break. He did spend the past century possessed by a demon. He’s done his time and some days are more than he can take.

A snippet from Chapter Four of Reap & Redeem

Reap & Redeem coverHe walked into the hotel lobby and leveled his gaze at the ragged young clerk who was reading a magazine behind the iron-barred, bulletproof service window. The clerk looked up, his eyes wide as Kylen paced toward him, steel-toed boots thundering across the worn oak floor. The kid backed away.

    “A room.” Kylen demanded.

The clerk didn’t speak. He was too busy staring at Kylen’s right hand.

“Did you hear me?” Kylen followed the kid’s gaze to the open scythe gripped by his side.

Well, shit. He hadn’t even realized he’d drawn the damn thing. Force of habit. His rage had demanded a response. Even if it was subconscious. His motivations didn’t make much sense these days, even to him.

Pawing at the Peg-Board of room keys beside him, the boy kept his eyes fixed on Kylen as he pulled one loose without bothering to note its number. The key jangled against the diamond-shaped key ring in his trembling hand before he tossed it onto the counter. He gave it a shove through the tiny pay slot before backing up all the way to the wall behind him. Kylen scooped up the key and headed to the third floor without another word.

  • Reapers Revealed: Heads Are Rolling – A Snippet From Reap & Redeem

We’re closing in on the Oct. 6 Release Day for Reap & Redeem, book two of the Reaper Series. Let’s get this party started with a scene from Chapter One where heads are already rolling.

    Reap & Redeem coverChapter One

Kylen kicked the head across the floor of the dark shed with his steel-toed boot. Blood dripped into a pool on the floor from his scythe, which he still gripped tightly with one hand. He straightened to his full height and tilted his neck from side to side, listening to his spine crack and pop. Another demon down.

“You don’t have to keep killing them yourself, you know,” Deacon said, grimacing at the black ooze spilling out of the severed neck.

“Yeah, I do.” Kylen turned and walked to the door, taking a quick survey of the cemetery. A dark, sticky trail marked his course.

“You have to admit, he’s efficient.” Nate picked up the head by the hair and dropped it into a black garbage bag.

“That’s one way to look at it.” Deacon pressed his hand, which was glowing with Reiki energy, to the center of the dead male’s chest, directly over his heart chakra.

Kylen watched as light radiated from Deacon, encasing him and the body in a soft glow. The demon boiled forth from the dead human host in a thick black torrent of sulfurous haze. Spreading his arms wide, Deacon summoned the stream, which penetrated through his sternum. His body shuddered and the light around him sparked and cracked like the arc of a welder. The glow intensified to supernova status before winking out. Several smaller streams of gray light flowed forth from the ruined body, too, entering through Deacon’s mouth.

“Well? Did you retrieve all the souls?” Nate lifted the feet and legs of the body onto the tarp he’d set beside it.

    Deacon frowned. “Yes.”

    “How many?”

“Three.” Deacon rose and grasped the body by the shoulders, helping Nate maneuver it. “And the demon.”

“I really hate this shit.” Nate said, pulling a spool of duct tape from his backpack.
They rolled the man tightly in the tarp, taping both ends so that none of the bodily fluids would discharge in transit.

“How many more demons do you think there are?” Nate wrapped the head in a plastic bag and walked toward the door.

“Grim thinks there are at least two dozen more,” Deacon reminded him.
“Great. Slow and steady wins the race, yeah?”

“I’m not sure we have the luxury of slow and steady anymore. At this rate, we’re never going to find them all. There’s already way too much collateral damage. This many missing humans in town won’t go unnoticed much longer. We need to find their exit portals and shut down the rest of the demons. Sooner would be better than later.”

Kylen waited in the doorway, dividing his attention between the business in the shed and the cemetery grounds. Deacon was right of course. They needed to close the portals. Permanently. As it was, they were playing a game of supernatural Whac-A-Mole. Close one portal and another popped up. New entrance portals continued to open each week, which then had to be closed by Grim and Deacon. And while one batch of demons gathered their fill of souls before sliding down the small one-way shoots to Hell—the exit portals, the next batch waited for their chance. It had become a never-ending battle and the reapers needed to press on.

They didn’t bother cleaning up the black ooze or the blood trail. The only way to make sure the scene was completely clean was fire, but arson would be sure to draw more attention to the mower garage by the edge of the cemetery than a few stains that could easily be oil or fuel. None of them were concerned about the law. There were far worse things for them to worry about.

They’d burn the body at home, and then bury the ashes and bits of bone. Just as they’d dealt with the other eleven. This host’s disappearance would never be explained. Good thing, since the guy’s head was detached.
