A Civil War soldier is hexed and dies to save his men. Can he find true love to live again?

Sarah Knight has a job she’s good at, a quirky BFF and a boyfriend who’s bad for her. When Sarah unearths a Civil War artifact on a ghost hunt at Chatham Manor in Fredericksburg, VA, she brings home more than a souvenir.

Lieutenant James “Tanner” Dawson fought for the Union, working as a supernatural liaison for his Major General in a secret Masonic offset called the Brothers of Peril. When he’s hexed by a witch, he learns the only way to save his men is to die himself. But death is not the end. Awakening 150 years later, he knows if he wants to be corporeal again, he has to find true love to break the hex: a task no easier in 21st century than it was in the 19th.

    Thank you!!!

  • Virginia is for Lovers: Haunt My Heart heats up Fredericksburg

    virginia_is_for_lovers

Haunt My Heart is set in modern day Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Why Fredericksburg? I knew I wanted to write a ghost story, and that the hero would be the ghost. I had no idea what was going to happen after that. I started Googling ghost stories and came upon the Lady in White ghost story at Chatham Manor in Fredericksburg, VA.

After that, it all snowballed into a five page synopsis and then a 68k story of a hexed Civil War soldier who gets a second chance at life and love after he’s freed from a fetter in modern day Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The businesses and locations in Haunt My Heart are fictionalized but based on my Google Maps streetview wanderings through the city’s downtown. I was even able to drive out of town, across the Rappahannock River and all the way out to Chatham Manor from the comfort of my writing cave. I stood on the virtual grounds of the national battlefield and looked back at Fredericksburg much as Tanner, the hero, would have.

  • Haunted Objects and Horrifying Hexes Haunt My Heart

The story of Haunt My Heart is based on the idea that a Civil War soldier is hexed and his spirit is trapped in a fetter (a haunted object).

It’s not a new idea. In fact, stories of haunted objects have enchanted and terrified both believers and nonbelievers for centuries.

  • Lost & Found: A souvenir turns out to be much more in Haunt My Heart

This week’s selection is from Haunt My Heart, which releases on January 5, 2015. Haunt My Heart is the story of a hexed Civil War soldier who gets a second chance at life and love after he’s freed from a fetter in modern day Fredericksburg, Virginia.

It all starts when Sarah finds a ring on the grounds of Chatham Manor after a night of ghost-hunting. She takes home much more than a souvenir.

    Excerpt from Haunt My Heart:

    HauntMyHeartFinal (533x800) - Copy

Ellie opened the driver’s side door, and Sarah waited for her to crawl across the seat of the old Mustang and pop the passenger-side lock. The broken power locks were one of many deficiencies in the classic car. Sarah retrieved her betraying phone from her pocket and powered it up as Ellie shuffled about inside the car.

As she checked her phone display, a glint of light on the ground to her right caught her eye. Aiming her screen at the ground like a flashlight, she bent low and searched for the source of the flash. Just as she began investigating, though, she heard the lock pop, and Ellie pushed the door open. The door hit Sarah in the head, knocking her to the cold, hard ground.

“Sorry,” Ellie said, scrambling to catch the door before it slammed closed again.

Sarah mumbled a few choice obscenities and rubbed her head. She reached down and ran her finger over something half-buried in the ground.

“What is that?” Ellie was hanging out the car, her body stretched across the seats.

“I don’t know.” Sarah turned the flashlight of her phone up to full beam and picked at the object in the frozen turf. “Do you have a pen or something?”

Ellie scuffled around inside the dark, rolling landfill that was her car—the interior lights long burned out—and produced a screwdriver instead. “Will this work?”

Sarah took the offered screwdriver and dug at the buried treasure. After breaking it free from its cold grave, she examined it by the light of her cell phone. “It’s a ring.”

    “Let me see.”

Ellie scrambled back into the driver’s seat. Sarah joined her in the car, then shut the door against the cold.

“Hold the light,” Sarah said, digging a Kleenex from her coat pocket to clear as much of the mud from the ring as possible.

The ring remained caked with mud, which filled the engraved edges, but the stone cleaned off easily enough. The set, a square cut black onyx, glinted. The cold metal of the band warmed in her hand.

“You know what that is, right?” Ellie asked.

“A ring?” Sarah couldn’t keep the sarcasm from her voice, not after the night she’d had.

    “An artifact.”

“No. Someone just lost a class ring. Like one of the sorority girls.”

“Does that look like a woman’s ring? No. No is the answer. That is a man’s ring. An officer’s ring or something. That could be a real-life, true-blue Civil War artifact.”

“I doubt it. And if it is, we’ll return it. This is a national park. There are rules.”

“I say finders keepers. Let me see it better.”

  • Supernatural weapons and magical battles: Behind the scenes of war in Haunt My Heart

What if the Powers-That-Be used supernatural weapons and magic in battle to achieve their objectives? Think what an advantage a power such as foresight would be. Generals could know ahead of time what the result of their course of action might me and adjust accordingly.

In Haunt My Heart, just such a system is in place.  And it’s not new. Presidents have employed such tactics since Washington’s reign. President Lincoln resurrected the practice in the mid 1800s to help the Union win the Civil War by forming and empowering a secret Masonic sect called the Brothers of Peril.

The BOP’s mission was to consort with proven witches and other supernatural entities to affect the outcome of the Union General’s campaigns against the Confederates to their advantage. One liaison who worked on behalf of the Union and communicated directly with one witch in particular was James ‘Tanner’ Dawson, the hero of Haunt My Heart.

When things go awry between Tanner and Sylvia, the witch, Tanner is hexed and his spirit is trapped in a fetter (a haunted object). Doomed to an eternity in Purgatory, Tanner’s only hope is to find true love to break the hex.

  • Ghost Scripts in Haunt My Heart: Love letters from the other side

    love letter graphic (1)

Since Tanner, the hero of Haunt My Heart, is a ghost, communication was…problematic. He and I both had to come up with a creative way for him to make himself known to the heroine without scaring the bejesus out of her. You can imagine the dilemma.

One way he manages to do just that is through letters.

Men have been courting women through letters for ages.

My future husband and I exchanged many love letters during our first year together while attending separate colleges three hours apart. Of course, our letters were mostly ‘sex mail’, a precursor to my writing career perhaps 😀

My personal letters are saved and hidden away in a box. Someday my daughter (now ten) will find those letters and…well, sorry about that, kiddo. I should probably wrap them up now with a warning label. Of course she’ll read them anyway, because I would read them and alas she is her mother’s daughter.

  • Ghostly encounters and spooky spectrums: A Civil War ghost gets a second chance in Haunt My Heart

    Ghost graphic 1

I’ve never had a paranormal encounter of any sort. I’m open to the possibilities however. I think if we believe in God, a higher being, the hereafter or whatever flavor your religion comes in, we have to be open to the possibilities of something more than ourselves.

Haunt My Heart is a ghost story.

Tanner is a benevolent ghost trying to break a hex for a second chance at life. He’s trapped in a fetterer (a haunted object) until he’s unexpectedly freed but not corporeal.

Do you believe in ghosts? Here are a few real life encounters from some of my friends:

I worked with a girl who lived in a haunted farm house. They would walk out of the house and the door would lock behind them and the windows would open and close on their own. They learned to take a key with them whenever they left the house. When they moved they thought that things stayed at the farm house, however, one night the horn on their car started honking waking everyone up in the neighborhood (this was before remote controls and emergency buttons) – my friends dad woke to find that her mom had died (from a brain aneurysm) – neighbors were there to take care of the kids while they went to the hospital. After her mom died they never again had any ‘run-ins’ with their ghostly friends. – Connie

Not a story that I share with people. Actually only 4 people know it. I had two occasions, years apart, where I know that I saw a ghost. I was driving to Buffalo, MO from Bolivar and both times it was a foggy morning. Crossing the Burns Bridge at AA & 32 I saw a ghostly white 60 year old man pushing a wheelbarrow across the road. Both times I came to a complete stop on the bridge and watched him walk the rest of the way across Hwy 32, and then disappear in the fog. – John

On the list of things I don’t admit much, I have seen a little, thin blonde girl in the house, once in the hall and once in the girl’s room (next to A’s bed). After 9 both nights. She has what seemed like a long, really old style coat, gone after just a minute. I looked through the house both times and nothing out of the ordinary other than a couple battery toys going off in the living room while everyone was asleep and an occasional weird feeling someone is watching us while in the garage.– Quill

I lived in a house that I believe was haunted by an old woman who had lived there for years and died there. The odd thing was, I was never scared by her shenanigans; I just always felt she was mischievous and didn’t intend any harm. Heavy things would fall off of shelves for no reason, and from time to time something would roll down the stairs from the attic. And then of course, I had moments when I just swore I wasn’t alone. I had never had that feeling in any other place I lived, nor have I since. – Tracy

There is always something happening here in my old house. I live just below an old cemetery. Lots of civil war soldiers, families from small pox, and several infant children. I think I brought several home with me as a child, as there are times when my chair rocks, and a voice wakes me up in the night chanting. Anyway, I think I took one with me when I went to college, then stayed with me through my first marriage, and of all things, they love green bean cans. To this day my green bean cans fall out of the cabinet…and I swear, the doors are shut. – Willy

I was in the Navy, station on a ship some years back. Late one night, around 1 am, I was taking some readings on a gauge. In order to take these readings I needed a very large pipe wrench. After using this pipe wrench I set it on a nearby table behind me. While taking the readings the pipe wrench fell to the metal floor. I whipped around knowing that I put that wrench in the middle of the table. Out of the corner of my eye I see a man walking toward the door. I ran after the man thinking someone was playing tricks on me, and I was going to ream them a new one. When he got to the door he looked back at me with a really sad smile and turned to leave. By the time I got to the door he was gone. Something bothered me for a while, then I knew it was a ghost .Because that man had a full beard. In the military, that wasn’t allowed at the time I was in or even now. – Leila
